F2: Fornaroli achieved his third victory of the season.
Leonardo Fornaroli won the Formula 2 race in Hungary on Sunday. He was joined on the podium by Pole sitter Roman Stanek and Jack Crawford.
By the start of the race, the Hungaroring track was sufficiently dry to race on slicks. Nevertheless, the formation lap was run behind the safety car, and the start was from a rolling start.
Roman Stanek confidently began the race. The first lap of thirty-seven went smoothly—with only John Bennett overtaking Dino Beganovic in the battle for fourteenth place. On the second lap, Beganovic lost another position, being overtaken by Rafael Villagomez.
Only Viktor Martins, Arvid Lindblad, and Jose-Maria Marti started on Medium tires, while the others chose Soft for the race first stint. Martins encountered issues on the harder tires and by the fifth lap dropped to fourteenth place.
On the same fifth lap, Ritomo Miyata attempted to overtake Beganovic at turn one but lost control and spun off. The Japanese driver rejoined last.
At the start of the sixth lap, a smoke came from the engine of Amori Cordila’s car on the main straight. The Rodin Motorsport driver stopped, and a virtual safety car mode was deployed. The race resumed on the seventh lap.
On the eighth lap, Oliver Goethe and Lindblad attacked Joshua Durksen, and in the second turn, both overtook him, with Lindblad gaining two positions—overtaking not only Durksen but also Goethe. Behind them, Richard Fershhor overtook Marti at turn one, while Gabriele Mini also passed both, moving into ninth place.
On the tenth lap, yellow flags appeared on the track, and the virtual safety car was reactivated due to technical issues—initially Martins slowed down then stopped on the track.
The race restarted on the eleventh lap, during which Bennett was the first to pit for mandatory tire change. Dann and Durksen overtook Goethe in the last turn, which was an unexpected move.
On the thirteenth lap, Durksen attempted to overtake Dann, but Alex held the position. On the fourteenth lap, Fershhor on Medium attacked Mini on Soft at turn one; Marti exploited this and overtook both. At the end of the lap, Brawning, Durksen, Goethe, Mini, and Villagomez pitted for a new set of Medium tires.
At the end of the fifteenth lap, Staneck, Crawford, Sami Megetunif, and Sebastian Montoya pitted to switch from Soft to Medium tires. Fornaroli took the lead, with Lindblad second. On the next lap, Fornaroli and Dann pitted. Thanks to a later pit stop, Fornaroli rejoined ahead of teammate Stanek in eighth place and as the first among those who had completed the mandatory pit stop.
On the eighteenth lap, Bennett re-entered the pits with a broken rear suspension after contact with Mini. His race ended there, and the stewards deemed the incident a race collision.
By the twentieth lap, Lindblad’s lead over Marti was 4.8 seconds. Meanwhile, Jose-Maria Marti was 1.2 seconds ahead of Fershhor. At this point, the stewards penalized potential leader Fornaroli by five seconds for speeding in the pit lane.
At the end of the twenty-second lap, Fershhor pitted. Richard rejoined the track in eleventh place behind Brawning. The following lap, Lindblad, the leader, also pitted. Arvid changed from Medium to Soft and rejoined in tenth place, behind Brawning.
At the end of the twenty-fourth lap, Marti and Kian Shields pitted, and Beganovic took the lead for one lap. Marti rejoined in eighth place, behind Brawning, but was quickly overtaken by Goethe. Regarding Lindblad, during his pit exit, he was overtaken by Fershhor and Goethe due to unheated tires.
By the twenty-sixth lap, the race leaders were Maini and Miyata, who had yet to stop. Fornaroli, Stanek, Crawford, Brawning, Fershhor, Goethe, Lindblad, and Beganovic completed the top ten.
At the end of the twenty-seventh lap, Maini went for his pit stop, and at the start of the twenty-eighth, Crawford attempted to overtake Stanek but was unsuccessful.
On the twenty-ninth lap, Fornaroli increased his lead over Stanek to a safe five and a half seconds, allowing him to stay ahead of his teammate after a five-second time penalty added at the finish.
On the thirty-first lap, Fornaroli assumed the lead, overtaking Miyata without much resistance in turn one, who had not yet pitted. Ritomo went for his mandatory pit stop at the end of the thirty-fifth lap and dropped out of the top ten.
Leonardo Fornaroli confidently secured his third victory of the season, increasing his overall points lead. Roman Stanek finished second, and Jack Crawford finished third, which allowed him to surpass Richard Fershhor in the standings and move into second place.
The next Formula 2 round will take place from September 5 to 7 at Monza.
