Hungary Grand Prix: Norris - Piastri - Russell

Cloudy. Dry. Air +22°C, Track +32…31°C

In the morning, rain fell at Hungaroring, the Formula 3 race occurred in a shower of spray and was full of incidents, but the weather cleared up by the afternoon, and by the time of the Formula 1 start, there was no sign of rain.

During the weekend, McLaren drivers dominated the sessions. On Friday, Lando Norris twice topped the timing sheet, and on Saturday morning, Oscar Piastri set the fastest time.

Qualifying was a close battle, with the top ten separated by just 0.543 seconds — a new absolute record. Unexpectedly, and to his own surprise, Charles Leclerc on Ferrari took pole position, with the margins decided by hundredths of a second.

The front row for the race was occupied by Leclerc and Piastri, with Norris and Russell on the second row, and unexpectedly on the third row, Alonso and Stroll—who had moved up after last week’s last row in Spa.

Pirelli brought the soft trio: C3, C4, and C5, serving as Hard, Medium, and Soft compounds. Hamilton and Gasly started on Hard, Sainz, Hulkenberg, and Albon on Soft, with the rest on Medium.

At the start, Leclerc maintained his lead. Norris and Hamilton lost two positions each. Lawson overtook Verstappen, but on the next lap, Max retook the position.

Barthelmet was suspected of a false start, but the stewards found no violations. Gravel kicked out from underneath Berman’s car and hit Hajar’s hand. Isaac complained to the engineer about an injury. Hulkenberg committed a false start and received a five-second penalty.

The top ten on lap 2: Leclerc – Piastri – Russell – Alonso – Norris – Barthelmet – Stroll – Verstappen – Lawson – Berman.

On lap 3, Norris overtook Alonso. Verstappen passed Stroll in a fight for seventh place.

Alonso was running fifth, forming a large train of cars in the "DRS train," where overtaking was impossible. Drivers waited for pit stops hoping to find clear track; some chose to conserve tires in an attempt to finish the race with one pit stop.

On lap 6, Hulkenberg changed tires; on lap 14, Colapinto; on lap 15, Ocon and Albon; on lap 16, Sainz; on lap 18, Verstappen; on lap 19, Piastri; on lap 20, Leclerc and Russell.

Charles moved ahead of Piastri and on lap 21 overtook Alonso, who had allowed him through. Russell overtook Barthelmet. Piastri also overtook Alonso.

On lap 21, Tsunoda made a pit stop; on lap 22, Antonelli.

On lap 24, Verstappen overtook Hulkenberg and then Gasly, climbing to 12th place.

On lap 26, after several attempts, Russell overtook Alonso for fourth place.

On lap 30, Verstappen overtook Hamilton, pushing him off the track. The stewards reviewed the incident after the race and decided there were no consequences. On lap 31, Max overtook Hajar.

On lap 31, Berman changed tires; on lap 32, Norris; on lap 33, Gasly; on lap 35, Hajar; on lap 36, Colapinto; on lap 37, Stroll.

The top ten on lap 37: Leclerc – Piastri – Russell – Norris – Alonso – Barthelmet – Lawson – Verstappen – Hamilton.

Norris set several fastest laps to catch up after his pit stop, but he hit the gravel and lost some of his advantage, then pushed his pace again.

On lap 38, Tsunoda pitted; on lap 39, Albon; on lap 40, Alonso; on lap 41, Barthelmet, Lawson, and leader Leclerc, who rejoined in seventh seconds behind Norris.

On lap 42, Hulkenberg made a pit stop; on lap 43, Hamilton; on lap 44, Russell.

On lap 45, Antonelli overtook Sainz for tenth place.

On lap 46, Piastri changed tires and rejoined third, five seconds behind Leclerc.

On lap 47, Gasly; on lap 48, Hamilton overtook Berman — Oliver reported problems with the car.

Piastri pushed hard, gaining a second per lap on Leclerc.

On lap 49, Verstappen made a pit stop. Hamilton overtook Gasly.

On lap 51, Hamilton overtook Ocon, and Piastri passed Leclerc for second. Oscar immediately gained a gap.

Berman stopped his car in the pits and retired from the race.

      Top ten on lap 52: Norris – Piastri – Leclerc – Russell – Alonso – Barthelmet – Stroll – Lawson – Verstappen – Antonelli.

On lap 53, Sainz changed tires. Leclerc, having moved into third, complained to the team that the car became unmanageable.

Piastri gradually reduced the gap to leader Norris.

Lapping cars, Hulkenberg hesitated, allowing Sainz to pass him.

Leclerc was falling further behind Piastri, Russell caught up and, on the second attempt, overtook him, moving to third. During the defense, Charles twice shifted on braking and received a five-second penalty.

Gasly received a 10-second penalty for an incident with Sainz.

The top ten on lap 63: Norris – Piastri – Russell – Leclerc – Alonso – Barthelmet – Stroll – Lawson – Verstappen – Antonelli.

With five laps remaining, Piastri caught his leading teammate in the DRS zone. Oscar’s tires had 14 fewer laps on them than Lando’s.

Oscar attacked several times; the cars nearly touched during braking, but Lando remained ahead — separated by seven-tenths at the finish.

Lando Norris won the Hungarian Grand Prix, his ninth career win and fifth of the season. This was McLaren’s 200th victory in history.

Oscar Piastri finished second — marking McLaren’s fourth consecutive double victory, seventh of the season, and 56th overall.

George Russell finished third on the podium.

Finishing sixth, Gabriel Bortoleto achieved his best-ever result.

Ahead lies a long summer break, and the fight resumes at Zandvoort in late August.
