IndyCar: Alex Palou won the title for the fourth time.
Alex Palou climbed onto the podium in Portland, finishing third, and that result was enough for him to become IndyCar series champion for the fourth time, and the third in a row.
An impressive achievement, especially given that the Spanish driver for Chip Ganassi Racing secured the title early, with two rounds to spare. This year Alex won eight races and stood on the podium on two other occasions, including this one, scoring 626 points from the first 15 rounds, which made him uncatchable for his rivals.
His nearest rival was Pato O’Ward of Arrow McLaren, and before the race at Portland International Raceway, a road course in Oregon, he still technically had a chance at the title, but luck was not on his side. He was leading when on lap 22 his car developed technical problems that took the team a long time to fix. In the end the Mexican returned to the track several laps down and finished 25th, the last of those classified.
The win went to veteran Australian Will Power, driving for Team Penske — and it was his first victory of 2025. Second place went to Dane Christian Lundgaard, O’Ward’s teammate at Arrow McLaren — he battled until the last lap and ultimately crossed the line just one and a half seconds behind the winner.
Palou did the same less than a second later, after which he received congratulations on another title.
“This is incredible! I simply couldn’t be happier than I am right now!” Palou commented after the finish. “The season is going wonderfully, as have the five years I’ve raced for Chip Ganassi Racing. I have no words to describe how grateful I am to everyone on our team, and I can’t wait to achieve more success.”
It is worth adding that, as a result of this round, engine builder Honda won the engine manufacturers’ championship.
After a poor qualifying, Robert Shwartzman started from as far back as 25th but was able to pass several rivals and finished 15th. His Prema Racing teammate Callum Ilott began the race 24th and ended it in sixth, matching the Italian team’s best result in its debut IndyCar season.
