The grandstands in Monza were already full in the morning, and by evening there were even more spectators in red uniforms. As in the first practice, the drivers began the session on the harder Hard and Medium compounds, assessing their performance and wear over race distance.
Gasly went off at Ascari, Albon impeded Hamilton at the first chicane, and on the tenth minute red flags appeared – Kimi Antonelli’s car got stuck in the gravel at the second Lesmo – and had to be recovered, with the young Mercedes driver watching the rest of the session from the pits.
Bortoleto overtook a Racing Bulls car under yellow flags – the stewards reviewed this incident after the session and did not punish him.
Under the red flags Oscar Piastri exited to the pit lane too early, not waiting for the restart time notification – the stewards will review this incident after the session. After the pause everyone went back out on Hard and Medium.
Bortoleto ran wide over the kerb exiting Lesmo 2, Piastri went onto the gravel there as well, and Albon went off in the first Lesmo. Leclerc complained of a lack of grip, and Verstappen of the car’s nervous reaction to any bump.
After locking his tyres Leclerc spectacularly shot across the gravel and grass at Ascari, continuing on. Hamilton and Piastri went through the gravel at Lesmo 2.
The timesheet was topped by Lando Norris, who set a lap of 1:19.878.

Practice in Monza is especially important. Only at this venue do Formula 1 cars run with minimal downforce and low frontal resistance to achieve high speeds on the long straights that make up the legendary circuit in the Royal Park. With reduced downforce the cars behave nervously, and drivers need time to adapt.
In the first practice there were temporary driver changes at two teams – in McLaren Alex Dunn sat in for championship leader Oscar Piastri, and at Alpine Paul Aroon replaced Franco Colapinto.
The first runs were done on the harder Hard and Medium tyres, assessing their wear over distance and gradually increasing pace.
There were a few minor incidents. Norris, Leclerc, Hülkenberg and Antonelli ran wide at the first corner, Lawson, Hamilton and Alonso touched gravel, Aroon spun at the second chicane – without damage to the cars. Hajar went off at Ascari – and the session had to be stopped with red flags to clear the gravel from the track.
Under the red flags Leclerc braked hard to avoid an illegal overtake, but still passed the Sauber. The stewards decided not to penalise him.
In the final minutes Russell’s car stopped on the straight before the second chicane due to hydraulic problems. The race control declared a virtual safety car, under which the session ended.
To the delight of the fans, the timesheet was led by the Ferrari drivers, the best time was set by Hamilton with a lap of 1:20.117.
