Sainz: I made it clear to the stewards that the penalty is unacceptable
At Monza, Carlos Sainz once again returned to the subject of the penalty he received in Zandvoort for the collision with Liam Lawson. The Williams driver said he had the opportunity to speak with the stewards, and now, together with the team, he is looking for a way to have the verdict reviewed.
Carlos Sainz: "I had the opportunity to sit down with the stewards for 15 minutes and analyse the incident. It became completely clear to me that once they had gathered all the necessary evidence and reviewed the points they would need to consider to reach the right decision, it was obvious, in my view, that they realised the decision that had been made was probably not the best.
Right now we're trying to find out whether we can collect enough evidence to change the penalty, because I am still firmly convinced that the penalty I received as a result of an incorrect decision was wrong. There may be a chance to review the situation.
If there was a misunderstanding, if there was insufficient evidence, or if the necessary analysis wasn't carried out, then there is still time to review the decision and change it.
Looking back, you could say the stewards had a very hectic day. Whether they were thrown off their stride by the number of incidents that occurred during the race or not, I am still firmly convinced—even now that I'm calmer—that the penalty was unacceptable, and I've made that very clear."
Williams team principal James Vowles said that Zandvoort, Monza and Baku would give the team an excellent opportunity to achieve a strong result. At the last round in Zandvoort, Alex Albon finished fifth, and at Monza Carlos discussed Williams' chances this weekend.
Carlos Sainz: "Our car handles braking after a long straight and 90-degree corners very well. However, it doesn't like corners with long, sweeping entries and exits, because those create balance issues.
At Monza we should look strong, but don't forget that this track has the Parabolica and Lesmo 1 corners, where we will lose time compared to our rivals, and those two corners are very important for lap time. But we have opportunities to make up time on the straights and in turns one, two, three and four, and thanks to stability under braking.
We have a very interesting car, and I've really learned a lot this year. I've had to adapt my driving style to different constraints. I like this process because it makes me better.
Yes, perhaps our car isn't the most pleasant to drive in certain types of corners, but it has other good qualities, and you just need to know how to get the most out of them. Besides, Williams has traditionally performed well at Monza, so I hope for a good result this weekend."
