Flavio Briatore announced that Alpine will make a decision by the end of October regarding Franco Colapinto's position for 2026. In an interview with Agence France-Presse, the 75-year-old team leader acknowledged that the Argentine newcomer has faced challenges but hinted that maintaining continuity is the favored route. "The team requires stability, and retaining the same two drivers contributes to that stability," Briatore stated.
During the recent Monza race, Alpine extended Pierre Gasly's contract until 2028, a move Briatore described as "essential for the team." "He’s among the top drivers and a crucial part of the project," the Italian noted. "He’s part of the team and is eager to achieve success with us," he added. Regarding Gasly’s partner, Briatore commented: "Currently, no decision has been made, but generally, stability implies keeping both drivers." "The most crucial aspect is to develop a competitive car."
At the end of the current year, Alpine will discontinue its Renault works program in favor of using Mercedes engines as it enters a new regulatory era, which Briatore believes will eliminate a significant disadvantage. "In 2026, we will have an engine comparable to others. It might be better or worse, but the excuses related to the engine will no longer apply," he said. "Honestly, we anticipated being in a better position this year. The current engine is truly a major handicap, especially with all 20 cars being within a second of one another. Just two-tenths of a second can drop you from sixth to seventeenth place."
Currently sitting last in the constructors’ standings, Briatore noted that Alpine has intentionally focused on the 2026 car. "Alpine lacks the resources to advance the 2025 car while simultaneously developing the new car for 2026. At some point, tough choices must be made," he admitted. Despite rumors regarding Renault’s long-term investment, he assured that support remains strong. "Financial backing is secure thanks to Renault and our sponsors. The wind tunnel and engineering teams are functioning effectively. We have everything necessary to succeed, and we must execute it," Briatore stated.
"We can reach the podium next year. We have the potential to finish in the top six, and even in the top four if everything aligns. I didn’t return just to be a bystander." Briatore, who previously led Renault to consecutive championships in 2005 and 2006, also emphasized the support from new CEO Francois Provost. "Francois Provost desires a competitive team, and I assure you we'll be in contention next year. This means aiming for podium finishes and placing in the top six or seven.
"From a commercial standpoint to a technical one, there’s high motivation across the board."
