Derek Daly thinks it's time for Hamilton to retire.
We have already quoted former Formula 1 management chief Bernie Ecclestone saying that it's time for Lewis Hamilton to retire. The same view is shared by former Formula 1 driver Derek Daly.
"Hamilton's move to Ferrari could ultimately cost Frederic Vasseur his job," he said in an interview with Racingnews365. "Lewis was one of the most gifted athletes the world has ever seen, but in my opinion his best days are already behind him. From a physiological point of view it's simply impossible for instincts and reflexes at 40 to be at the level of a 20‑year‑old. That's human nature. I don't think Hamilton will be able to perform at the same level he used to.
"By signing Lewis, Ferrari made a brilliant decision from a marketing point of view, but not in terms of on‑track results. The team has suffered because of it, Lewis himself has suffered, and I don't see the situation improving. I can't imagine Lewis being able to reach the level at Ferrari that he used to compete at. The best thing that could happen is if Lewis realises this himself and decides to step down, to take the next step in his career. In that case Ferrari would be able to hire a young and aggressive driver capable of making a greater contribution than Lewis in the coming years."
