Max Verstappen makes his GT3 debut on the Nordschleife.
In mid-September Max Verstappen received a license from the German federation allowing him to compete in NLS (Nürburgring Langstrecken-Serie) races, the rounds of which take place on the legendary Nordschleife of the Nürburgring. Thus, the reigning Formula 1 World Champion obtained the formal right to take part in these races behind the wheel of cars in the fastest GT3 category.
Today Max announced that he will debut in GT3 this very weekend — on September 27 he will contest a four-hour race on the Nordschleife.
Verstappen is set to pilot a Ferrari 296 GT3 for Swiss team Emil Frey Racing. His co-driver will be Briton Chris Lulham, who races for Verstappen’s team in the GT World Challenge Europe Endurance Cup and in sim racing.
Max Verstappen: “GT3 racing is my passion, so I’m really looking forward to the start! I love racing, including outside Formula 1. Every lap on the Nordschleife gives a new experience. Many endurance racing fans come to the rounds, so the atmosphere is great as well.
Racing in categories other than Formula 1 is my hobby. I dream of one day starting the 24-hour race on the Nordschleife.
Next year the 24-hour GT3 marathon at the Nürburgring Nordschleife will take place on May 16–17, a week before the Canadian Grand Prix, so theoretically Max could be free of other commitments on those dates and fulfill his dream.”
