"I'm very confident in the Mercedes engine."

Carlos Sainz expressed his uncertainty regarding the overhaul of Formula 1's rules for 2026, cautioning that the new hybrid systems may lead to a peculiar driving experience despite improved acceleration. Speaking on Spain's Partidazo de COPE, the Williams driver indicated that the next generation of cars will launch more aggressively but will experience rapid energy depletion on straightaways. "I believe we'll be quicker from 0 to 300 - we'll hit 300 much sooner than we currently do," Sainz stated. "However, the battery will run out quickly on the straight. We'll accelerate to 320 kilometers per hour rapidly, but then we'll spend a lot of time without battery power. Next year, we’ll lose 50 percent of the power halfway down the straight."

The new regulations will significantly alter the philosophy of power units, where increased electrical output will be countered by reduced internal combustion assistance—a combination that some drivers have privately described as "unfun" and "confusing" to drive. Nevertheless, Sainz remains hopeful about Williams' prospects when the changes take effect. "Williams has progressed from ninth to fifth this year - that’s a significant improvement," he remarked. "In Formula 1, moving up four positions from one season to the next means you’re on the right track. Next year, it might be tough to start winning races, but I believe we can be a team competing closely with Ferrari, Mercedes, Red Bull, and others. That’s what excites me - being part of Williams’ resurgence."

The Spaniard mentioned that a key reason for joining Williams was his trust in the team’s engine supplier. "I have a lot of confidence in the Mercedes engine," he said. "This was one of the primary reasons I chose Williams. Everything I’ve heard about the Mercedes engine has been positive, and it still is." Sainz highlighted that with Mercedes also supplying engines to McLaren, Alpine, and its own works team, eight cars will feature the same power unit in 2026. "That means we must excel with the chassis to differentiate ourselves," he added. "Aston Martin with Honda will be in the mix, Ferrari will be present - so it’s going to be a very competitive field."
