      Ayao Komatsu has strongly criticized Pirelli's decision to impose mandatory tyre-stint limits for the upcoming Qatar GP, a decision that ensures at least two pit stops and removes any strategic variation. The 25-lap restriction on each set of tyres, announced earlier this week, was implemented due to renewed concerns over structural wear at Losail. However, the Haas team principal believes the solution goes too far.

      "I do not support those artificial restrictions," Komatsu stated in Las Vegas. "Pirelli is just fearful following last year’s issues. With the one-stop strategy, they thought, 'They wouldn’t really do that, would they? Oh no – they did.' Now they’ve set a limit that makes a one-stop strategy unfeasible."

      Komatsu emphasized that the problem lies not with one-stop races but rather with the elimination of strategic diversity. "I don’t believe we should resort to this in a sport," he added. "We often discuss the need to avoid dull one-stoppers, but artificial regulations, like we saw previously in Monaco and Qatar, ruin the race."

      He cited recent grand prix events as demonstrations of how variability can naturally create excitement. "Look at the races in Brazil and Mexico – you can easily see how thrilling a race becomes when tyre wear determines whether it’s one or two stops, or even two or three," he remarked. "When multiple strategies are possible, that’s when a race becomes captivating. That’s what Pirelli should aim for."

      Komatsu is concerned that next weekend will replicate the heavily restricted 2023 Qatar GP, when an 18-lap maximum required all drivers to follow the same three-stop strategy. "That race in Qatar was very disappointing," he said. "Everyone was given the exact same pitstop window. Once you introduce an artificial element, everyone arrives at the same conclusion."

      He also mentioned this year’s Monaco GP, another race where strict conditions removed any significant variation. "I don’t believe this approach will be effective," he said plainly. "You saw it this year in Monaco as well."

      This criticism comes at a crucial time, as the FIA is still contemplating broader mandatory two-stop regulations starting in 2026, but has not yet reached an agreement with the teams.
