"We will now make every effort to fix the car."

Formula 1's closely monitored "shakedown week" in Barcelona experienced its first significant incident on Tuesday when Isack Hadjar crashed the new Red Bull car in the fast final corner under challenging conditions.

With heavy rain predicted, most teams decided not to take to the track, leaving only Red Bull and Ferrari to run. The rain began as early as 10:30am, greatly restricting any meaningful track time.

Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies downplayed the crash, emphasizing the tough conditions. "The conditions were very tricky in the afternoon, and it was obviously very unfortunate for the day to end like that, but such things can always happen," Mekies stated.

He also mentioned that Max Verstappen's program was impacted by the weather, noting, "He only managed one lap before the rain, but that’s just part of it." Verstappen ultimately completed 26 laps in damp conditions and had a minor spin. Despite the limited running time, competitors have noted the apparent strength of Red Bull's new in-house Red Bull-Ford power unit.

Ben Hodgkinson, technical director of Red Bull Powertrains, expressed confidence in the program's foundation. "I have dedicated a significant part of my life to designing racing engines. I know what constitutes a good racing engine department. I recognized an opportunity to create something exceptional here at Red Bull Powertrains, and Red Bull did not spare any expense in establishing top-notch infrastructure."

"I have complete trust in our skilled team and our engine facility," he added. "We possess all the elements necessary for success here."

Competitors have also observed Red Bull's bold "size zero" sidepod design.

Mercedes opted not to run in the wet conditions, citing tire management concerns. "We don’t have many sets of intermediate tires from Pirelli," explained Mercedes chief engineer Andrew Shovlin. "While it’s beneficial to understand the car on a wet track, we don’t want to rush anything."

Ferrari, however, completed runs with both race drivers, and engineering chief Matteo Togninalli expressed optimism about early results. "Reflecting on yesterday, our customer teams, which we supply engines to, also gained substantial mileage, and that’s a positive sign," he said.

Alpine, Audi, and Cadillac also chose not to run, while McLaren delayed the planned debut of its black test livery due to the weather. One of the few visible technical innovations was footage showing the new mirror-mounted hazard lights in action. These lights flash simultaneously on both sides to alert following drivers of a slow or stationary car, offering brighter and faster flashes compared to conventional road car indicators.
