Science: After Berman's accident, it is necessary to draw conclusions.
Carlos Sainz only finished 15th in Japan, while his Williams teammate Alex Albon was last among those who finished, losing to the race winner by 2 laps. However, this gap was explained by the fact that he had to stop in the pits five times.
Carlos Sainz (15th): “I’m confident we know which direction we need to move in, and during the upcoming 5-week break, we will work hard to achieve improvements in all areas. I can’t guarantee that we will be more competitive in Miami, but if we use this time effectively, we can take measures that will allow us to significantly improve in the second half of the season.
Today we got the maximum out of the car, had a solid start, and chose the right moment for the pit stop, and I’m satisfied with that. The team and I are collaborating well, trying to understand the nuances of the FW48 and the new regulations, and I feel that we are ready to make real progress.
But now we need to do something like a reset, adjust our goals, as it’s clear that everything we’ve been doing in preparation for 2026 isn’t working. Additionally, it will be very interesting to see what changes the FIA and FOM will make to the regulations – I hope they come up with something better by the Miami race.
After the crash that Oliver Berman was involved in today, we need to draw conclusions, as we warned that at such closing speeds, this could very well happen. We are not satisfied with what is happening now, and we can only hope that a decision will be made that will help avoid similar incidents in the future and make racing safer.
I was surprised when we were told that only the qualifying rules would be adjusted, while the racing rules would remain as they are, because it contributes to the spectacle. But we will continue to insist that the problem concerns not only qualifying but also racing.
Lastly, although this is also important, I want to add: I’m very glad that after such a serious accident, Oliver is okay.”
Alex Albon (20th): “I spent the whole race in traffic, so nothing happened to me, and it turned into a sort of test session. We wanted to test some solutions related to the front wing to better understand everything and gather more information. We tried to understand the reasons for yesterday’s problems, although I’m not sure we succeeded.
On the other hand, why not practice pit stops? (laughs) In general, we operated by trial and error. Overall, the car gives a normal impression, considering its capabilities, and we are showing results that we are realistically capable of. We are trying to conduct the races as best as we can, but we also need to solve a number of issues and increase the speed of the FW48.
There is a lot of work ahead, but we will have about five weeks, and the team needs to achieve improvements in many areas.”
