F1 source dismisses claims about a 2027 return to India.
"The available slots on the calendar are limited."
A source within Formula 1 has rejected assertions that the sport will be returning to India as soon as 2027, despite encouraging remarks from government representatives. Earlier this week, India's sports minister, Mansukh Mandaviya, announced, "There will be an F1 race in India in 2027. This is guaranteed." He went on to state that the inaugural race would take place at the Buddh International Circuit and emphasized that tax reforms and governmental support would facilitate a successful return. However, an insider close to Formula 1 has now firmly refuted that timeline. "While India is an incredibly valuable market for the ongoing expansion of Formula 1, with a highly dedicated fanbase, we will not be racing there in 2027," the source reportedly told F1 media outlets. "Interest in hosting Formula 1 races has never been greater, yet the number of spots on the calendar is restricted." India hosted Grand Prix events from 2011 to 2013 at the Buddh circuit, but a mix of tax disputes and financial challenges led to its departure from the sport. Although the nation has re-emerged as a potential long-term target—with MotoGP also briefly returning in 2023—Formula 1 seems to be adopting a more cautious stance regarding any return. This speculation arises as Alpine driver Pierre Gasly recently hinted to Canal Plus that the calendar could expand to 25 Grand Prix events starting in 2027.
