"For him, this is the best opportunity"

Christijan Albers has disclosed that Aston Martin was one of several teams pursuing Gianpiero Lambiase, emphasizing the high demand for Max Verstappen’s race engineer. "Naturally, I contacted him," said Albers, a former driver who collaborated with Lambiase earlier in his career, while speaking to De Telegraaf. "I was curious about the situation, and obviously, there were several developments. A month or two ago, we heard rumors regarding Aston Martin."

According to Albers and Dutch journalist Erik van Haren, Lambiase had several prestigious options available, including a possible team principal position at Aston Martin and interest from Williams. "For him, this is the best opportunity," Albers stated, pointing to Lambiase’s upcoming transition to McLaren.

"He also needs to manage his own career. It’s not just about the Formula 1 drivers, but also about the careers of team principals, engineers, mechanics, and individuals like him. You must always stay alert and identify what the better options are for yourself. That ambition exists in everyone in Formula 1, whether you’re a driver or a mechanic."

Albers is confident that Lambiase ultimately made the right decision by choosing McLaren. "Everyone aims to progress. It’s that straightforward. He has received an opportunity. Following the Aston Martin rumors, there has been quite a buzz. Other teams have reached out to him as well."

He also mentioned that even Verstappen’s camp would have supported Lambiase’s choice. "You can be dedicated and loyal to a driver," Albers noted. "He is very loyal to Max, and I’m certain they’ve had discussions, but when such an opportunity arises, Max Verstappen and his circle would also encourage him to take advantage of such a remarkable chance. He certainly did."

Albers highlighted that Red Bull might not have offered the same long-term progression. "I envision him evolving into a team principal. That opportunity doesn’t exist at Red Bull, making the decision straightforward. He has truly matured at Red Bull, but you always reflect on missed opportunities if you don’t act. I believe he made an excellent choice."

This transition has inevitably sparked renewed speculation about Verstappen’s future, with Ralf Schumacher suggesting it might indicate the Dutch driver’s eventual departure from Red Bull. However, this perspective has been strongly dismissed by Verstappen’s father. "Ralf says a lot of nonsense," Jos Verstappen commented on social media.

In a separate conversation with RaceXpress, he remarked, "We’ve been aware for some time that he (Lambiase) was planning to leave. This is a fantastic opportunity for him. We understand this and have encouraged him to ‘seize this chance!’ Now, it is up to the technical management led by Laurent Mekies to find a replacement for GP."

Despite previous hints that Lambiase’s departure could initiate a series of changes, Jos remains unconvinced. "That was years ago, and circumstances have evolved, especially after achieving four world championship titles," said Verstappen senior, referencing Max’s earlier statement that he would leave Red Bull if Lambiase did. "They’ve accomplished so much together. Ultimately, it’s Max’s decision, but I believe he will continue."
