Lambiase had the Aston option while discussions about Verstappen's future took place.
"For him, this is the best chance."
Christijan Albers has disclosed that Aston Martin was one of several teams interested in Gianpiero Lambiase, highlighting how in demand Max Verstappen's race engineer has become. "Naturally, I reached out to him," said Albers, a former driver who had worked with Lambiase earlier in his career, in an interview with De Telegraaf. "I wanted to know what was happening, and indeed there were discussions. A month or two ago, we started hearing rumors about Aston Martin."
Albers, alongside fellow Dutch journalist Erik van Haren, noted that Lambiase had several prestigious options to consider, including a potential team principal position at Aston Martin and interest from Williams. "For him, this is the best opportunity," Albers remarked, referring to Lambiase’s impending move to McLaren. "He must also manage his own career. It's not only about the Formula 1 drivers but also the careers of team leaders, engineers, mechanics, and individuals like him. You must always remain vigilant and identify better opportunities for yourself. Everyone in Formula 1 shares that ambition, whether they’re a driver or a mechanic."
Albers believes Lambiase made the right decision in opting for McLaren. "Everyone wants to progress. It’s straightforward. He received an opportunity. Since the Aston Martin rumors emerged, there has been significant buzz. Other teams have also reached out to him." He added that even Verstappen’s camp would have supported this decision. "You can remain loyal to a driver," Albers said. "He is very loyal to Max, and I’m sure they discussed this, but when such an opportunity arises, Max Verstappen and his circle also advise taking such a fantastic opportunity. He did just that."
Albers also noted that Red Bull may not have provided the same long-term prospects. "I believe he can develop into a team principal. There’s no such possibility at Red Bull, so there’s no need to ponder that. He has indeed matured at Red Bull, but opportunities must be seized; otherwise, you might regret it later. I think he made an excellent choice."
The move has sparked renewed speculation regarding Verstappen’s future, with Ralf Schumacher suggesting it could hint at the Dutch driver's eventual departure. However, this notion has been strongly refuted by Verstappen’s father. "Ralf talks a lot of nonsense," Jos Verstappen stated on social media. In a separate conversation with RaceXpress, he added: "We’ve known for some time that he (Lambiase) was leaving. This is a fantastic opportunity for him. We understand and have told him, 'You need to do this, seize this chance!' Now it’s up to technical management under Laurent Mekies to find a replacement for GP."
Despite earlier suggestions that Lambiase’s departure might create a ripple effect, Jos remains unconvinced. "That was years ago, and circumstances have shifted, especially after four world championships," said Verstappen Sr., referencing Max’s previous assertion that he would leave Red Bull if Lambiase did. "They’ve accomplished so much together. Ultimately, it's Max's decision, but I believe he will continue."
