The latest car news and reviews, no nonsense.

Mercedes-Benz's flagship electric vehicle has faced significant challenges. Dealers have claimed that the EQS is not "aspirational" enough, leading to substantial discounts since sales of the large liftback sedan have been sluggish. At one point, it was rumored that the EQS would simply be replaced by an electric version of the S-Class, resulting in a complete halt of production for the U.S. market. However, manufacturing has since resumed, and the car is undergoing a midcycle refresh.

On Monday, the 2027 Mercedes-Benz EQS was unveiled, featuring a revised design, increased range, more gears, faster charging, and an upgraded interior to boost sales. Additionally, it introduces Mercedes' new steer-by-wire system with a yoke.

When the 2027 EQS hits the U.S. market later this year, its battery capacity will increase from the current 118 kWh to 122 kWh. However, the battery itself is not physically larger; it simply has greater energy density. This enhanced capacity is expected to raise the EPA-estimated range from today's 385 miles to around 420 miles on a full charge. A new two-speed transmission, first seen in the electric CLA and more recently in the electric GLC-Class, will assist the EQS in achieving better efficiency through varying gear ratios for different driving speeds.

This transmission is connected to new electric motors, which should also be more efficient, producing either 544 or 585 horsepower depending on the configuration.

The vehicle operates on a new 800-volt electrical architecture, allowing for charging rates of up to 350 kW. This means the EQS can gain about 175 miles of range in just 10 minutes under optimal conditions. When connected to a 400-volt fast charger, the EQS will nearly divide its battery pack, reaching a peak charging rate of 175 kW.

While numerous changes have taken place beneath the exterior, the overall stance and design of the EQS remain consistent. The plastic grille, featuring the S-Class treatment, continues to be incorporated, now with backlit stars. The iconic hood ornament can also be illuminated, making it clear that you've arrived in style.

Inside, optional front-door panels showcase stitched laurels reminiscent of the Mercedes logo. The cupholders, redesigned due to customer feedback, now feature new silver trim. Additionally, buyers will enjoy heated front seatbelts, similar to the upgraded S-Class.

However, the standout feature is the steering yoke. Its design resembles a starship more than a Tesla, with closed loops at each end to promote—or at least encourage—a proper nine-and-three hand position. The yoke and the accompanying steer-by-wire system will be available as an option in the U.S. at an unspecified price.

Mercedes-Benz has not disclosed the pricing for the updated EQS when it becomes available in showrooms later this year.
