WEC: Giovinazzi secured pole for Ferrari in Imola
Antonio Giovinazzi secured pole position ahead of the first round of the new WEC season, and his crew, competing in the Ferrari hypercar with the number 51, will start from pole in tomorrow's 6-hour race in Imola.
Giovinazzi, a former Formula 1 driver, pilots the Ferrari 499P sports prototype alongside teammates James Calado and Alessandro Pier Guidi; this trio is the reigning world champions in endurance racing.
Antonio completed his best lap in 1:30.127 – just 0.011 seconds faster than Ryo Hirakawa, but the Japanese driver from the Toyota factory team managed to slot in between the two Ferrari cars, ahead of Antonio Fuoco.
Malte Jakobsen achieved the fourth fastest time in the Peugeot 9X8, while Norman Nato rounded out the top five in the Team Jota Cadillac V-Series.Rs, and Nyck de Vries also made it into the third starting row in the factory Alpine A424 hypercar.
Robert Kubica in the AF Corse Ferrari sports prototype recorded the 8th fastest time.
