Melbourne will lose their season opener, despite their promise to "make it difficult."

Bahrain is set to restart the Formula 1 seasons from 2021 to 2024.

Melbourne is likely to lose its status as the season opener for Formula 1 starting in 2027, despite previous intentions to "make it challenging" for competitors to take that position. Australian Grand Prix leader Travis Auld had stated just last month that he would oppose any efforts to move the first race from Albert Park. However, various reports in Australia, from outlets such as TV channels Nine and Sky Australia, now indicate that Bahrain will take back the opening race slot in 2027, with Saudi Arabia expected to follow, placing Melbourne in third position. This change would once again disrupt Melbourne’s long-standing role at the forefront of the race calendar.

The Australian Grand Prix consistently kicked off the season from 1995 until 2019, with the exception of the years 2006 and 2010 when Bahrain hosted the first race. Nonetheless, that trend has been interrupted in recent years. Bahrain started the seasons from 2021 to 2024 before Melbourne resumed its role as the opener in 2025 and 2026.

The timing of Ramadan plays a significant role in this latest schedule change. With Ramadan concluding in early March 2027, Bahrain is well positioned to host the opening race on March 14, coinciding with pre-season testing in the area. Meanwhile, Melbourne is anticipated to hold the third round in early April, while still fulfilling its contractual obligation to be part of the first three races of the season.

According to its existing agreement, the Australian Grand Prix is assured of at least five season openers from 2025 to 2035, suggesting more chances could arise beyond 2027. The official 2027 calendar from Formula 1 has yet to be published.
