The FIA wants to decide on the 2031 engine by August.

      In Formula 1, active discussions are underway regarding what the next-generation power units should be for the 2031 season. German Auto Motor und Sport has managed to uncover some technical details about the upcoming innovation.

      At this point, all power unit suppliers agree that it is necessary to reduce costs and simplify the engine design. Preference is given to a turbocharged V8 with a standard motor-generator MGU-K. At the same time, the internal combustion engine must run on environmentally friendly fuel.

      As for the electric component of the power unit, it should be significantly reduced compared to the current generation.

      However, discussions are still ongoing, although Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has urged not to delay so that all manufacturers have enough time for development.

      For his part, Jean Todt, the FIA's technical director responsible for Formula 1, hopes that the process of discussing the parameters of the new power unit will be completed before the summer break in August.

      Jean Todt: "Last year, we already had negotiations with power unit manufacturers, during which we began to explore options. I believe that discussions need to be concluded in the next two to three months. I hope it won't take longer. Some specific decisions should be documented by the end of the year.

      We are trying to find common ground so that manufacturers see themselves in the new regulations when we make significant changes to it.

      The weaknesses of the current power units are well known. We will try to adjust the course to reduce the most serious problems. Given the financial situation of manufacturers, cost reduction is a priority."
