Norris: I want the car to allow me to fight for wins.
This season, McLaren is not doing well, and there are quite specific reasons for that. In any case, only Oscar Piastri has managed to reach the podium so far, although Lando Norris has 4 points more than his teammate – simply because the first two races went a bit better for him than for his partner.
But the British McLaren driver, the reigning world champion, wants to have a car that truly allows him to compete for victories.
Lando Norris: "In Japan, Oscar had a chance to win the race, and I completely agree with him in assessing our car – it’s not bad, and he handled the situation well. Overtaking on the track in Suzuka is very difficult, and I think that if it weren't for the safety car, he could have won and should have done so. That was the most impressive thing about how Oscar raced in Japan, despite Kimi Antonelli being about a second faster per lap.
By the way, do you remember that when I won my first race here in Miami (in 2024), the appearance of the safety car helped me too? But in some situations, you win, and in others, you lose. You can be a second slower than your competitor, and that was the case with Oscar in Japan, but he still should have won.
In any case, we want the car to be fast enough to immediately allow us to compete for victories. We hope to have just such a car. However, we’ll see.
We know that we are not the only ones who have prepared technical innovations for the Miami race; other teams have done so as well, although we are confident that we can improve and that we are moving in the right direction, but it is still difficult to judge how much we will be able to catch up and how significant the gap will remain. But the car has indeed been upgraded, and our task is to get the most out of it.
As for the amendments made to the regulations, in reality, there is little we can change; it’s just a step in the right direction, but we will still have to adapt to many things. Definitely, there should be some improvements in qualifying, but there won’t be any significant changes in the race.
It’s not just about what we, the drivers, want – the changes must also satisfy the teams, management, and people from different companies, you understand? Although everyone agrees that many things need to change in the future, we don’t know when that will happen – in a year, in two, or in three."
