Engine-swap expert Diesel Pump UK is putting some of its project vehicles up for sale, including a 1952 GMC pickup that the team has been developing for seven years, aiming to maximize the potential of the popular Mercedes-Benz OM606 diesel engine among tuners. Dubbed the “Notorious GMC,” it's available for £60,000, which is around $81,500 at current exchange rates.
The OM606 3.0-liter inline-six is such a prevalent option for swaps that it has been likened to the 2JZ of diesel engines. Like the Toyota gasoline inline-six, it responds favorably to modifications. After experimenting with various configurations, Diesel Pump UK owner Luke Dale opted for both a turbocharger and a supercharger, resulting in this truck producing 600 horsepower while still achieving up to 30 mpg, according to Dale. Moreover, it is capable of performing wheelies (at least when the bed is loaded with weight).
Each forced induction method is equipped with its own intercooler, with the supercharger managing low-rpm needs and the turbocharger activating as engine speeds rise. A passive valve switches between the two, while Diesel Pump UK’s custom billet injector pump supplies fuel.
To ensure the diesel power is utilized for wheelies rather than generating small metal shavings, a Gearstar-modified 4L80 four-speed automatic transmission and a Currie 9-inch rear end with a limited-slip differential are included. The engine itself boasts a stunning blend of billet and chrome, which is crucial since its size in relation to the engine bay makes concealing poor workmanship impossible.
The rest of the truck is equally impressive. The body features retro-style hand-painted graphics while retaining some original patina. The interior has been updated in a classic restomod style, with the original bench seat receiving additional bolstering on the sides, a dashboard fitted with modern digital gauges, and sound-deadening material on the firewall to minimize noise. Dale aimed to keep the suspension stock but switched to five-lug hubs to accommodate the new rear axle and Wilwood disc brakes.
Overall, it's an impressive build that will likely cost less than many restomods even when shipping is considered. Additionally, if you need more seating, Diesel Pump UK is also offering a Land Rover Defender powered by a backhoe engine.
