Mecum is set to host its 2026 Indianapolis auction from May 8-16, showcasing an array of rare muscle cars from the pre-EPA era. Among the most exceptional is the 1971 Plymouth Hemi GTX, produced towards the end of this period.

According to Mecum, this model is one of only 11 from 1971 featuring the 425-horsepower, 426-cubic-inch Hemi V8 and a four-speed manual transmission. Additionally, it is one of just four equipped with the Super Track Pack, which included 4.10 gearing and the Sure Grip limited-slip differential. It is believed to be the sole 1971 Hemi GTX adorned in Winchester Gray. A skilled graphic designer will be needed to condense all this information for a car show information board.

The car is also generally well-equipped for its time, boasting power steering and brakes, bucket seats, and the era-appropriate pairing of Mopar Rallye wheels and Goodyear Polyglas tires with bold white lettering. It features the distinctive Air Grabber hood, equipped with a pop-out slot rather than a fixed scoop. The vehicle has undergone a rotisserie restoration while maintaining its original, numbers-matching engine and transmission.

Before Volkswagen adapted it for European electric vehicles, GTX symbolized American muscle. Introduced in 1967, it adhered to the quintessential muscle car formula of cramming a powerful V8 into a mass-market chassis. It was marketed as a more upscale variant, making way for the Road Runner (which debuted the following year on the same Chrysler B-Body platform) and establishing Plymouth as a viable competitor to the Pontiac GTO and Oldsmobile 442, among others. Similar to most Mopar muscle cars, it could be outfitted with either the 440-cubic-inch V8 or the Hemi.

The GTX and other B-Body models were redesigned for 1971 with the new “fuselage” design language, which I believe is underrated. These cars showcased more flair compared to their conservatively styled predecessors. However, the fuselage models emerged just as manufacturers began preparing for new emissions regulations, and insurers recognized that powerful yet affordable cars could be detrimental to business. With its robust 426 engine, the 1971 Plymouth Hemi GTX symbolized the conclusion of an era. Within a few years, large V8 engines would either be downgraded or eliminated entirely.

Although the Plymouth brand is no longer in existence (the Prowler wasn’t enough to save it), the Hemi name remains widely recognized. Mecum anticipates this vehicle to fetch between $325,000 and $350,000 when it goes up for auction on May 15. A manual 440 version (also with matching numbers) is set to be sold at the same auction on the same day, but is estimated to only generate between $110,000 and $130,000. Such is the power of rarity.
