In the world of professional mechanics, a powered ratchet is a fundamental tool. For DIY enthusiasts, it may seem like a luxury, but if you frequently work on vehicles, a battery-powered ratchet can alleviate hand discomfort and save time. Milwaukee's newest Gen 2 M12 Fuel cordless ratchet kit offers an excellent balance of performance and build quality at an attractive price.

      M12 FUEL 3/8" Ratchet Tool + Battery + Charger Kit: $329

      What It’s For

This power ratchet is designed for easily removing nuts using a socket. It performs all the functions of a manual ratchet but eliminates the tedious repetitive motion of using a manual handle in tight spaces. It doesn't deliver the force of an impact gun for stubborn bolts, nor does it provide the precision of a torque wrench. Instead, it serves as a reliable tool that turns minutes of ratcheting into seconds of button-pressing.

      Important Specs

      - Stuck-nut breaking torque: 70 ft-lbs

      - Speed: 400 rpm

      - Weight: 1.5 lbs (bare), approximately 2 lbs with battery

      - Run time: Typically handles 150-200 fasteners. Should last a full workday.

      - Charge time: About 50–60 minutes to fully charge on a standard charger. 35-40 minutes with an M12/M18 Multi-Voltage Rapid Charger.

      Standout Features

Previously, Milwaukee required you to choose between models: the 2557 offered high torque but was slow, while the 2567 was fast but lacked power. The new 3053 model combines the best aspects of both. With 70 ft-lbs of torque and 400 rpm, it outperforms the older "power" model and approaches the speed of the former "speed" model, making it superior to its predecessors.

The head profile has been reduced by about a quarter inch, making it easier to access tight spots, which are common under any vehicle.

Additionally, it includes an LED light and a modular trigger. If you prefer a specific grip style, you can easily switch between a larger paddle or a smaller button to activate it. I personally liked both options, although I've been using the paddle more often.

      Initial Quality

This tool feels fantastic to use. Milwaukee’s ratchet is sufficiently heavy to give a sense of durability while remaining light enough for easy handling. The buttons and switches provide satisfying feedback, and the design is sleek and well-defined. Ergonomics appear well thought out.

A professional-grade feature that you'll appreciate if you want to keep this tool for a long time is the integrated grease port at the head. Instead of disassembling the tool when the gears start to sound dry, you can easily lubricate it using a needle-nozzle grease gun through the port on the housing's top.

      Value for Money

The Milwaukee Gen 2 cordless ratchet costs $329, including a battery and charger, or $229 as a bare tool if you already own M12 batteries.

The question of whether it’s worth the investment depends on the "Milwaukee Tax." If you already have several M12 batteries, the $229 bare tool is a straightforward upgrade. However, if you're starting fresh, $329 is a considerable expenditure for a tool that essentially performs the same function as a $15 Craftsman handle—just more rapidly. You are not just paying for the ability to turn a bolt; you're paying for the 15 minutes you save each time you remove a plastic undertray.

Overall, this Milwaukee model is a compelling choice at its price point. Its specifications compete well with more expensive models, and the tool is visually appealing and enjoyable to use.

      Competitors and Alternatives

DeWalt’s Atomic 20V cordless ratchet matches the power (70 ft-lbs) but operates much slower (250 rpm vs. 400). Currently, it costs more ($418) for a kit including the tool, battery, and charger, but DeWalt products often go on sale. If you already have DeWalt batteries, you can purchase the bare tool for just $179, which is a fantastic deal. However, the larger 20V battery can be cumbersome in an engine bay or under a vehicle.

At the high end of the market, the Snap-on CTR762 is said to have superior ergonomics, although its power specifications are similar to Milwaukee’s, and it is approximately twice the cost.

For a more budget-friendly option, Harbor Freight’s Hercules and Bauer models are available for under $100. However, they typically offer around 30-35 ft-lbs and 275 RPM, marking them as "entry-level"
