The FIA and the teams have agreed to change the regulations in 2027.
The Formula 1 teams and the organizers of the World Championship are eager to quickly resolve the issues related to the current regulations, and have already reached preliminary agreements that certain changes must be made to the design of the power units in 2027.
The essence of these changes is to abandon the 50/50 power ratio between the internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric systems, making this proportion closer to 60/40. This should allow drivers to pilot in a more familiar manner, maximizing the performance of their cars and worrying less about battery charge conservation and its rational use.
This topic was the focus of today's meeting at the FIA level, attended by the heads of all teams, as well as representatives from FOM and power unit manufacturers. The first item on the agenda was an analysis of the effects of the amendments made before the Miami Grand Prix, after which the participants of the online meeting moved on to discuss further measures for adjusting the regulations.
It was decided not to wait until 2028 and to take all possible measures now. This is despite the fact that there is not much time left until 2027, and any structural changes to the racing engines require serious efforts and also entail other consequences, in particular, it will be necessary to redesign the chassis to accommodate larger fuel tanks.
In a statement released following the meeting, the FIA stated that the goal of the changes is to increase the power of the ICE by 50 kW through an increase in fuel mass flow, while the power of the electric component of the power unit is correspondingly reduced from 350 kW to 300 kW.
"Agreements have been reached that now require more detailed discussions of these changes at the level of technical groups with the participation of team representatives and engine manufacturers before a final decision is made on the configuration of the power units," the statement reads.
The federation also reports that the analysis of the effects of the recent amendments is ongoing, and the introduction of a number of additional measures may be timed to coincide with the next stages of this season. These measures concern steps to further enhance the safety of starts, as well as measures aimed at safety in rainy conditions. Moreover, a decision on improving the light signaling systems may be made before the Canadian Grand Prix.
All steps related to the adjustment of the regulations must receive formal approval from the World Motor Sport Council.
