The 2026 Volkswagen Tiguan SE offers a compelling blend of practical dimensions and user-friendliness. During a lengthy journey across New England, where I faced everything from sunshine to snowstorms, I found myself appreciating this simply equipped vehicle.

I've been contemplating that top-tier models might not always be the best choice. This thought arose while reflecting on the Tiguan after reading our original review of a high-end SEL model. Comparing the interior of the SE with the feature-rich SEL, I believe this vehicle looks more appealing with basic plastic rather than leather and wood finishes.

The Tiguan SE is a straightforward vehicle, aesthetically unified and capable. It's not outstanding in any specific aspect but represents a solid offering at a fair price.

      The Basics

The name “Tiguan” originated from a public contest to name the car (seriously) nearly 20 years ago. It combines “tiger” and “iguana,” a fact confirmed by The New York Times and an old Consumer Guide review. I find this absurdity amusing, but that’s where the whimsy ends.

The Tiguan is the epitome of a modern-day people's car: a relatively small SUV with space for four plus cargo (or two plus a trip to Home Depot). It comes with a two-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and all-wheel drive. VW claims it can achieve 30 mpg on the highway, which aligns with my own experience. This vehicle serves as your European option compared to the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5, and Hyundai Tucson.

The interior and exterior design are tidy without veering into the dull realm of minimalism—it is distinctly German. There are no flashy gimmicks here, yet you do have a variety of ambient lighting modes.

      Driving the Tiguan

After driving it from my ranch in New York’s Hudson Valley to Stowe, Vermont, and back, I find it challenging to pinpoint any major issues with the Tiguan’s driving dynamics. The steering is adequate, acceleration is sufficient, braking is decent, and the traction control system managed some challenging icy roads effectively. Fuel efficiency could be improved. Visibility is good, and it operates as expected—there’s not much more to hope for from a family SUV like this.

I was pleasantly surprised by the balance the car achieves between comfortable daily driving and responsive handling. It leans more towards firmness and stability rather than softness and floatiness; the steering is quick to respond for a compact SUV. I appreciate that. Acceleration is a tad less immediate; while the car isn’t alarmingly slow, there is a noticeable delay when you want to accelerate from a stop. The brake pedal has a slightly long travel, though it becomes easy to master for smooth stops.

The seats are firmer and offer more aggressive bolstering than those in other vehicles in this category—whether this is a pro or con depends on personal preference. I found them enjoyable.

The shifter is a twist-style stalk emerging from the steering column, which took some time to get used to, but it does create more space in the center console. The area between the driver and passenger features ample storage options and a multifunction knob that toggles between volume and menu control. It functions better than expected, though it does require some personal adjustment.

      Highs and Lows

Both the design and on-road performance are well-suited for what this vehicle aims to be: widely appealing, unobtrusive, and simple. It looks appealing without seeking attention. The driving experience is predictable and capable. Various interior lighting and display settings offer a nice selection of personalization options.

Take a look at the interior details here:

The most significant downside for me is the overly large, cartoonish central display screen and the cumbersome slider control beneath it. A screen of this size adds no real value for the user; it merely creates more negative space between buttons. The sooner consumers recognize this and automakers accept it, the better.

However, the fuel efficiency in city driving is where the Tiguan struggles under scrutiny. I will elaborate on that further.

      Features, Options, and Competition

The front-wheel-drive Tiguan S starts at approximately $31,000. The SE model I tested begins around $34,000 for front-wheel drive, while my all-wheel-drive (4Motion) test vehicle totaled just over $37,000, including destination charges and one option: Monterey Blue paint for $455. Upgrading from the S model provides enhancements such as nicer wheels, a power liftgate, a power driver’s seat, and ambient interior lighting. The SE R-Line adds a panoramic sunroof, heads-up display, and 20-inch wheels (starting around $37,000 for front-wheel drive), with the highest tier

The Tiguan features a sleek and tidy design that enhances its attractiveness, yet it falls short compared to competitors in one significant aspect.
