The Lancia 037 is regarded as one of the finest rally cars in history. It famously triumphed over the Audi Quattro, becoming the last two-wheel drive vehicle to secure a World Rally Championship title. Kimera Automobili is dedicated to enhancing this legacy further. In 2021, the Italian firm launched a modern homage called the EVO37, followed by the EVO38 in 2024, which draws inspiration from the 037’s never-seen successor. However, their ambitions don’t end there.

The Kimera K-39 is a wholly new hypercar that bears a resemblance to the 037. It was revealed on Friday at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este and is equipped with a twin-turbo V8 engine from Koenigsegg. While some modifications were made to the turbos compared to those in Koenigsegg's own hypercars, this engine still produces 1,000 horsepower at 7,350 rpm and 885 pound-feet of torque at 5,500 rpm, with a rev range extending up to 8,250 rpm.

Kimera is not merely purchasing engines and installing them in its chassis. The company intends to have the Koenigsegg-powered K-39 certified as a new vehicle in markets worldwide. Koenigsegg is also granting access to its cloud for diagnostics and software updates, ensuring that owners won’t be abandoned after their purchase.

The K-39 retains the recognizable look of the 037, featuring the same short wheelbase and large, boxy fenders. However, the various scoops and ducts are more pronounced and intricate, showcasing modern aerodynamic knowledge. Kimera hopes to test this aerodynamically optimized design at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. While the company has not announced when this attempt will take place, it described it as a “defense of a vision of the automobile that upholds the refined and sustainable evolution of combustion technology.”

It’s uncertain how effectively Kimera will showcase the merits of the traditional internal-combustion engine at Pikes Peak, where altitude diminishes engine power and gives an edge to electric vehicles. However, it does aim to confront some unresolved matters. The Lancia factory team never participated in the Pikes Peak race, whereas rival Audi set a record in 1987 that still stands as the fastest pre-pavement time.

Kimera plans to produce 10 Pikes Peak-spec vehicles for its most devoted customers, featuring larger rear wings and other aerodynamic enhancements. Pricing for both the Pikes Peak and regular versions has not been revealed, but it’s safe to assume that any vehicle equipped with a Koenigsegg V8 will come with a hefty price tag.
