Alonso unsure about 2027 as Aston-Honda faces challenges.

Fernando Alonso acknowledges that he has not yet made a decision regarding his future in Formula 1 after this season. The nearly 45-year-old's contract with Aston Martin runs until the end of 2026, coinciding with a challenging season for the team and its new Honda partnership. Speculation surrounding Alonso’s future has grown, particularly after Ralf Schumacher suggested that both Alonso and Lewis Hamilton should consider retirement. In an interview with DAZN in Montreal, Alonso admitted that the current circumstances are complicating any long-term decisions.

"Honestly, I haven’t thought about it at all," he stated. "We are facing this tough situation at the start of the championship and need to fix it. We hope to manage that in the latter half of the season. Perhaps this will help me clarify if I want to continue for another year. It's challenging to make a decision with my current performance."

Aston Martin arrives in Canada still seeking significant improvements after a problematic start to 2026, grappling with issues related to drivability, gearbox performance, energy management, and notably, vibrations. Alonso acknowledged that there are no substantial performance upgrades for Montreal. "We don’t have any performance upgrades, so we can concentrate on handling," he remarked. "Different philosophies are coming in the next few months regarding engines and aerodynamics." When asked about the Canadian Grand Prix, he anticipated performances similar to those in the initial races.

Top team official Mike Krack admitted that managing Aston Martin’s frustrations is becoming increasingly challenging, especially for the drivers. "You ask them the same questions on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday," Krack told reporters. "For them, it’s tough to keep repeating themselves and giving the same responses. We have to shield them from this because the frustration accumulates."

Krack confirmed that only minor, mostly unnoticeable changes have been made for Canada, with more extensive aerodynamic upgrades postponed until later in the season. "We’ll need to make significant progress," he conceded. "And we understand that in Formula 1, it’s hard to advance in the middle of a season. We need to stay motivated by improving slightly at each race."

Meanwhile, lead Honda engineer Shintaro Orihara indicated that the Japanese manufacturer is still confronting both performance and reliability challenges. "In Miami, we made a significant advancement in battery reliability," Orihara explained. "Now we’re concentrating on enhancing energy management and drivability. We need to refine our combustion engine and lessen friction to boost our performance this year."

Krack also touched on Adrian Newey’s ongoing leadership amidst recent rumors about health issues and possible management changes. "I leave these decisions to Adrian and those responsible for the technical development strategy," he said.
