Russell emphasizes 'no panic' as Antonelli's influence expands.
George Russell maintains that he is not feeling anxious despite the increasing pressure from his teenage teammate Kimi Antonelli at Mercedes. Antonelli, just 19 and now in his second season in Formula 1, arrives in Montreal leading the world championship comfortably after an impressive start that includes three consecutive wins from pole position. In contrast, the more seasoned Russell is 20 points behind after a challenging weekend in Miami, which has raised doubts about his position within the team.
When asked about the significance of the Canadian race for his championship aspirations, Russell responded, "It's just another race for me." He added, "The championship isn't even on my mind. I know my capabilities and my speed. Clearly, Miami was a setback." He pointed out that he had previously bounced back from a poor performance in Miami last year by performing well in Canada. "There's really no need to panic at all," he emphasized. "We've completed four races, and there are at least 18 more to go."
Russell dismissed suggestions that Mercedes' current car design no longer aligns with his driving style, stating, "No, I think it's very circuit-dependent, just like it was last year. If I assess it objectively, Miami was the only setback. There's no reason for concern. It's business as usual."
However, Antonelli's growing influence within Mercedes is becoming more apparent as the team rolls out its first major upgrade package of the season this weekend. "It's quite a significant package," remarked the Italian regarding the Montreal updates. Antonelli also shared that he is becoming actively engaged in the car's development direction, a role typically reserved for more experienced drivers. "After Miami, I had extensive discussions with a few engineers involved in development," he explained. "I have more experience now, and the team has more faith in me."
He is beginning to provide input on what could enhance his confidence in the car. The teenager noted that Mercedes engineers are increasingly taking his feedback into account for future updates as well. "I'm starting to contribute more of my ideas, especially for upcoming updates," Antonelli stated. "This dynamic is evolving where I can share my thoughts based on my experience with the car."
Former driver Ralf Schumacher recently cautioned that Russell risks being relegated to a number two role, similar to Valtteri Bottas during the Lewis Hamilton era.
