Russell maintains that there's 'no reason to panic' as Antonelli's influence increases.
George Russell asserts that he is not feeling anxious despite the growing pressure from his teenage teammate Kimi Antonelli at Mercedes. Antonelli, only 19 and now in his second season in Formula 1, arrives in Montreal firmly at the top of the world championship standings following an impressive start to the season with three consecutive victories from pole position. In contrast, the more seasoned Russell is 20 points behind after a challenging weekend in Miami that has raised doubts about his position within the team.
When asked in Montreal about the significance of the race for his championship aspirations, Russell stated, "It’s just another race for me." He added, "The championship isn’t even on my mind. I know my capabilities and the speed I possess." He acknowledged that Miami was a disappointing weekend but noted that he had bounced back from a similarly poor performance there last year by recovering strongly in Canada. "There’s really no need to panic at all," he emphasized. "We’ve completed four races, with at least 18 more to go."
Russell also dismissed claims that Mercedes’ current car design does not align with his driving style. "No, I believe it’s very dependent on the circuit, just like it was last year," he explained, stating that Miami was the only real setback. "There’s no reason for concern. It’s business as usual."
However, Antonelli's increasing influence at Mercedes is becoming more apparent as the team rolls out its first major upgrade package of the season this weekend. "It’s quite a big package," the Italian mentioned regarding the updates in Montreal. Antonelli also shared that he is now actively participating in the direction of the car's development, a role typically associated with more experienced drivers. "After Miami, I had extensive discussions with a couple of engineers involved in development," he said. "I have gained more experience and the team offers me greater confidence."
He added, "I’m beginning to offer my insights on what could enhance my confidence in the car." The teenager noted that Mercedes engineers are increasingly receptive to his feedback for upcoming updates. "I’m starting to contribute more of my suggestions, especially for future updates," Antonelli said. "This dynamic is developing where I can offer my ideas based on how I feel about the car."
Former driver Ralf Schumacher recently cautioned that Russell risks becoming permanently relegated to a number two role, similar to what Valtteri Bottas experienced during the Lewis Hamilton era.
