Antonelli claims that his Formula 1 competitors now have respect for him during his pursuit of the championship.

"The season is still lengthy, and we understand that,"

Kimi Antonelli believes his competitors now see him differently following his impressive beginning to the 2026 season. The 19-year-old Mercedes driver, who has secured victory in four out of the first five races, holds a comfortable lead in the world championship and was awarded the esteemed Lorenzo Bandini Trophy in Brisighella on Friday.

A large number of fans gathered in the quaint Italian town to celebrate the championship leader. "There are so many people here for me - I didn’t expect such a warm welcome," he smiled. "Thinking about the illustrious names who have received this award before me, like Schumacher and Hamilton, makes it even more emotional."

Despite his 43-point lead in the championship, Antonelli emphasized that it’s premature to become complacent. "The season is still lengthy, and we understand that," he stated. "I’m pleased because the team is performing exceptionally, and I want to repay their dedication by giving my all."

The Italian also spoke about the rising rivalry with teammate George Russell, which intensified during the Canadian GP weekend. "The competition with Russell throughout the season will be challenging, but we don’t want to engage in confrontations that could jeopardize the team," Antonelli remarked. "I discussed the rivalry between Hamilton and Rosberg in 2016 with Toto Wolff. He shared both the good and the bad things that we should avoid, because the team remains our top priority."

Antonelli acknowledged that his recent performances have altered how rivals perceive him. "I know they regard me with respect now, because I’ve demonstrated what I’m capable of," he said. "I aim to send a clear message that I want to stay ahead - that’s my objective."

The Mercedes driver also dismissed claims that his success has transformed his personality. "I am exactly as you see me, and I don’t wish to change that," he mentioned. "Of course, on the track, things are entirely different."

"The kind demeanor is only apparent off the track. Formula 1 is a ruthless environment - you either dominate or you become dominated." Antonelli also disclosed that he has formed a friendship with Max Verstappen outside of racing. "We discuss GT, F1, but also our personal lives and experiences," he shared. "Ultimately, away from the paddock, we’re just regular guys."

The Italian was also queried about Ferrari, as many in his homeland aspire to see him in red one day. "But currently I’m a Mercedes driver, and I’m extremely happy here," Antonelli replied. "The team provided me with a tremendous opportunity as a young driver, supported me throughout my journey, and I feel it’s my duty to give my all for them."

"I owe it to the team and hope to achieve as much as possible with Mercedes. I’ve spoken with the team, and they wish to continue our partnership in the future - not just next year. However, for that to happen, I need to perform well. "They likely intend to keep working with me beyond 2026, but I must deliver results. Then we’ll see."
