The C8 Chevy Corvette offers a range of engine choices: the 6.2-liter LT2 found in earlier Stingrays, the 6.7-liter LS6 in the newer models, and the high-performance 5.5-liter LT6 in the Z06. Electrified versions of the first two power the all-wheel-drive E-Ray and Grand Sport X, respectively, while a twin-turbo version of the LT6 (known as LT7) powers the ZR1. Additionally, a battery-assisted variant of this engine drives the 1,250-hp ZR1X.
But what if you prefer an 8.1-liter big-block instead?
Your only option is to build one yourself, which is exactly what Larry Hofer from Raylar Engineering has done. He is well-versed in 8.1-liter performance, having literally written the book on the subject, making it fitting for him to install one in the middle of a C8. This project has been a true labor of love, one that we have extensively covered here. Now, it’s finally out on the road.

Hofer hasn’t yet been out burning rubber or racing on the highway in his Corvette. He is currently testing it at regular freeway speeds to evaluate its performance. This is a significant milestone for the project, especially since no one else has even attempted anything as ambitious on this platform.
The 8.1-liter C8 successfully completed a test loop with minimal issues that Hofer is in the process of resolving. Onboard diagnostics indicated several misfires, but they never impeded the throttle response significantly. A sensor also inaccurately detects the frunk as being open at all times. However, these problems have not prevented the car from driving up and down the road, occasionally hitting nearly 90 miles per hour.
Although these engines are typically used in pickup trucks, Hofer has made extensive modifications. It now includes direct injection and variable valve timing, and soon it will be equipped with a custom intake featuring individual throttle bodies. The goal is to merge the advantages of significant displacement with modern engine technology, enhancing responsiveness and drivability. The car is nearly silent while cruising.

As per the latest video on Greg Quirin’s YouTube channel, the car is approximately 95% finished. Once they address the misfires, stabilize the idle, and resolve the frunk chime issue, Hofer will have a truly remarkable hot rod. What an achievement!
