Wolff: It has been a long time since there was such an exciting qualifying session!
Toto Wolff is probably happier than anyone else about Kimi Antonelli's successes because he has always believed in his talent and took the risk of bringing the young Italian driver into the Mercedes team when he was just 18 years old. A little over a year has passed since then, and Kimi's results this season confirm that the risk was well justified.
Toto Wolff: "One of those who praised Kimi from the very beginning was Max Verstappen – I think it's worth mentioning. In qualifying, these two showed very close results, and overall, the top three positions were taken by drivers from three different generations. One of them still has to prove that he is capable of much, while the other two are already recognized as some of the best drivers of their time.
I haven't seen such an exciting qualifying session in a long time, as the rivalry was very intense. At the same time, Kimi gradually built his confidence; in the first session, his results were not particularly impressive, but then he started to improve little by little. He is very young, but he has already reached a high level and drives with a certain ease. And when a driver has such a positive mindset, he is capable of such achievements.
As for George Russell, we need to work on the psychological aspect of what’s happening. Although he is usually characterized by determination and a very sensible approach to things. But this weekend, it’s not about psychology; it’s that he hasn’t been able to gain confidence behind the wheel.
His qualifying didn’t start well, although his performance in the third practice was quite normal. When a driver fails to show the necessary results, it affects his confidence, and it’s very hard to recover. I think if there had been another session ahead, he would have reached a higher level, but today his car didn’t hold the track well, and if you lack grip in Monaco, you simply can’t attack."
