What defines a luxury vehicle? Is it a sophisticated exterior, an opulent interior, or a prestigious emblem? Possibly all of these? Genesis may not be the first brand that comes to mind for most when considering their first high-end purchase after achieving success, but the 2026 Genesis GV80 is proving to fulfill more “luxury” criteria than many of its European competitors.

As the flagship model of the South Korean car manufacturer, the GV80 delivers one of the most upscale driving experiences in an SUV priced under $100,000. It features an elegant exterior design that, although it was launched five years ago, still appears quite contemporary and attracts admirers. The interior accommodates five passengers (or seven in the SUV configuration), incorporates a plethora of technology, and, most importantly, presents a chic and comfortable cabin filled with numerous standard features that surpass those found in BMW and Mercedes models.

I had the opportunity to drive the 2026 Genesis GV80 in the top-tier 3.5 Prestige Black AWD trim. More specifically, I tested the Coupe variant, which closely resembles its SUV equivalent save for the sloping rear roofline. It was finished in a stunning Uyuni White, an attractive pearlescent shade that is one of only two options available in this high trim. The interior was outfitted with luxurious quilted black Nappa leather and rich open-pore wood accents on the dashboard, center console, and doors. My test vehicle was equipped with 22-inch black wheels shod in Michelin Primacy Tour tires, which significantly enhanced its appearance but didn't notably improve ride comfort or handling.

On the road, the GV80 offers a luxurious feel, and I honestly can’t recall when I last used that word to describe a standard car. I understand this particular model comes with a price tag of $91,545 (including a $1,495 destination charge), yet fundamentally, it is a regular production vehicle, not a limited or exotic one. Nevertheless, the manner in which it drives, whether on urban streets or highways, resembles that of a British ultra-luxury vehicle rather than something mass-produced in Korea.

      Genesis

Equipped with a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 engine, it generates a solid 409 horsepower and 405 lb-ft of torque, which is necessary given that this SUV weighs 5,200 pounds. The engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, features an e-supercharger, and is part of a mild-hybrid system with 48-volt architecture. Consequently, acceleration is robust, and ample torque is available. Stepping on the accelerator makes the entire SUV lean back and push forward with power, albeit without extreme speed. It isn't particularly quick or nimble, but its movements feel substantial and occasionally sluggish, despite the adaptive suspension.

That said, I would prefer a wheel and tire configuration that would provide a taller sidewall for improved comfort, as that’s where this SUV excels. Retaining 22-inch wheels and lower-profile tires purely for aesthetics seems unnecessary.

Potential buyers might find this aspect surprising. While many European competitors boast sharper handling and more dynamic driving experiences, they can't rival the Genesis’ overall refinement without tacking on a considerable amount of optional upgrades. The Genesis may not offer an exceptionally engaging or spirited drive but excels in enveloping the driver and passengers in a luxurious atmosphere that they are likely to prefer over sportiness—at least I would, if I were seeking the most comfortable ride for everyday commutes. It ultimately becomes a trade-off. Which quality would you prioritize in your daily driving?

From a usability perspective, the cabin is aesthetically pleasing yet practical, though I have reservations about the two similar knobs located beneath the dashboard. One serves as the shifter, while the other, almost identical, controls the infotainment system. I frequently confused the two, mistakenly using the shifter to operate the center screen (which is also touch-sensitive) and vice versa. Aside from this minor issue, the technological experience is largely smooth once you acclimate to the layout and functionality.

      Verdict

In my recent experiences with several BMW SUVs, I found them to be too harsh in their ride quality, and the Mercedes SUVs felt overloaded with unnecessary technology and design quirks. Furthermore, both German brands appear to be struggling with design consistency at the moment. In those respects, Genesis surpasses them, but it falls short in terms of cornering capabilities with its boat-like handling.

At a price of $91,545, the top-of-the-line GV80 is not inexpensive, nor is it suited for everyone, but I would contend that most individuals enamored with German brands and their emblems would likely enjoy driving this vehicle more. Just saying.

As the flagship SUV of the brand, the Genesis GV80 presents a more luxurious and polished offering compared to BMW or Mercedes, yet there is one aspect where the Germans still excel.
