In the truck market, remaining stagnant is not an option. If you’re not introducing something new and impressive—be it a redesign, new engines, or innovative technology—you risk falling behind. General Motors recognizes this, which is why it’s unveiling all three with the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado.
Nearly every aspect of the new half-ton truck is enhanced. That is, if you desire a more contemporary pickup.
It’s Quite Striking
You might notice that the new Silverado embraces modern design from just one glance, featuring standard stacked LED headlights with a slim upper element and a C-shaped lower section. The taillights are also LED, and the design along the sides of the truck sets it apart from previous models. More clearly defined wheel openings and a redesigned bed shell contribute to this updated look.
The interior is certainly more contemporary as well. There was a time when GM trucks lagged behind the competition in terms of upscale interiors, but that’s no longer the case—at least in terms of features. Every 2027 Silverado comes equipped with a 16.3-inch center display and a 12.2-inch digital gauge cluster, even in the Work Truck version. High Country and ZR2 trims also include an 11.5-inch passenger screen, which is a popular feature in new pickups.
However, what I find more appealing is the Multi-Flex center console, which transforms into a practical workspace. It’s true that Ford pioneered this, but Chevy didn’t need to create a complex folding shift lever since all Silverado models have column shifters (as it should be).
Larger V8s? In This Economy?
At the forefront of the refreshed full-size lineup are the next-generation small-block V8s, available in 5.7 liters and 6.6 liters. GM hasn’t disclosed much about these engines yet, as we don’t even have horsepower and torque figures. Regardless, you can expect enhancements over the outgoing 5.3-liter’s 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque, and the 6.2-liter’s 420 hp and 460 lb-ft.
Lower-spec Silverados still come with the 2.7-liter TurboMax four-cylinder engine as standard, now paired with a 10-speed transmission instead of the previous eight-speed. Truck enthusiasts will be pleased to learn that the 3.0-liter Duramax diesel inline-six returns with broader availability, including the option for a Silverado WT (Work Truck) model.
It remains to be seen how this engine lineup compares to those from Ford or Ram until testing is conducted, but it certainly holds promise. Currently, GM is the only manufacturer introducing genuinely new V8s in its full-size trucks, as Ford has used the same 5.0-liter for an extended period, and Ram just reintroduced the old 5.7-liter Hemi. It’s slightly frustrating that we don’t have the power figures for the new GM small-blocks yet, but they will be available eventually.
The Off-Road Trail Boss and ZR2 are Also Enhanced
Chevy continues to offer its two specialized four-wheel-drive variants for the Silverado: Trail Boss and ZR2. The former is slightly more moderate yet still capable of off-roading with a two-inch lift and 34-inch tires, while the latter is more rugged, featuring Multimatic DSSV dampers, 35-inch tires, and standard locking differentials for both front and rear. The Silverado ZR2 Bison Edition returns for 2027, as Chevy collaborates again with Multimatic to provide a trail-armored vehicle with reinforced bumpers, rocker rails, and skid plates for the front, transfer case, rear differential, and fuel tank.
Additionally, the ZR2’s cabin now boasts true carbon fiber inserts on the doors and console. This marks the first use of this material in Chevy trucks, and it certainly appears that way. The dark fiber design is enhanced by Torch Red accents, with even the seatbelts featuring bright edges that unify the look. I’m quite fond of that detail.
Refreshed Trim Levels, Featuring a More Platinum-Like High Country
Overall, there are seven trims available for Chevy’s new Silverado 1500. It starts with the Work Truck and progresses to Custom, Custom Trail Boss, Trail Boss Silverado (the trim name is the same as the model name), ZR2, and High Country. This means the automaker has eliminated the LT trim and simply renamed it as “Silverado.”
The top-of-the-line High Country is a popular choice for Chevrolet, as truck buyers are increasingly looking for more upscale options. It has always had a rugged yet stylish vibe—not as western-themed as Ram’s Longhorn or Ford’s King Ranch but in that same category
