Everything has just changed dramatically. What was once up is now down, and down is up—it's all a bit confusing, but water might not actually be wet. Hyundai has created something so impressive that Porsche felt compelled to incorporate it. And now, it has.
On Wednesday, the 2027 Porsche Taycan was unveiled featuring simulated gear shifts and, as Porsche describes it, “a more emotive electric sport sound.” Additional minor modifications include a NACS charge port resembling Tesla's design.
These simulated gear shifts are referred to as “virtual gears,” with the functionality called E-Shift, as stated by Porsche. This feature is available for all 2027 Taycan models, though it comes standard on the Turbo GT variant and promises a “perceptible shift motion,” according to the company.
The virtual transmission can be controlled using paddle shifters on the GT Sport steering wheel to imitate eight gears. The E-Shift function can be activated using a new mode switch located on the steering wheel itself. The system offers both automatic and manual operation.
Taycans have previously included synthetic noise, but Porsche claims this system—which utilizes speakers to emit artificial sound similar to Hyundai’s version—has been “reinterpreted.” It is now officially designated as Porsche Electric Sport Sound, closely resembling sport exhaust.
Additionally, a virtual rev counter has been incorporated into the 2027 Taycan to track the fictitious RPMs from the simulated transmission.
All 2027 Taycan models, except for the Turbo GT equipped with the Weissach Package, include a Tesla-like NACS DC fast-charging port on the passenger-side front fender. The driver-side front fender retains a J1772 AC port. Porsche mentioned that a CCS adapter will be included with the Taycan.
The Taycan is also getting a revamped infotainment system for 2027. Porsche described the updated system as modern and minimalist, now featuring a 3D model of the car in the actual color chosen by the customer. Configurable widgets have been introduced, along with enhanced voice control through the AI-supported Voice Pilot. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also included and now offer deeper integration, including improved functionality for the charging planner. Moreover, Porsche has upgraded the wireless smartphone charger to include MagSafe technology, capable of supplying up to 25 watts of power.
The Taycan, Taycan 4, and Taycan 4S models are now equipped with a larger 105 kWh battery pack as standard, referred to as the Performance Battery Plus. This battery is rated for a peak charge rate of 320 kW when using an 800-kW DC fast charger.
Porsche has announced that orders for the 2027 Taycan are now open, starting at a base price of $114,250, which includes a $2,350 destination charge. Deliveries are set to commence in the fall.
