Norris: We have gone around our laps almost at the limit.
McLaren drivers start the Austrian Grand Prix from the third row, but believe they have extracted almost everything the MCL40 is capable of in qualifying.
Lando Norris (6th): "We had a decent qualifying session. Sixth and seventh positions are not the results we want to show, but it seems to me that we drove our laps almost at the limit of our cars' real capabilities.
Of course, one could assume that we could have achieved more, as we were only a little behind, but today we got the maximum out of the MCL40. Technical reliability does not concern us. We know we are not as fast as the cars that outpaced us. We were behind them in Barcelona as well, but I drove a bit better there.
Tomorrow we have a long race with many pit stops, and a lot can happen during the Grand Prix. Let's see what we can achieve."
Oscar Piastri (7th): "Unfortunately, we were just not fast enough. I think my teammate and I have been separated by no more than half a tenth all weekend, and we feel like we did everything we could.
On the last lap, I was not entirely precise in a few places on the track, but the car was lacking speed anyway to challenge George Russell. We are a bit disappointed that our performance was better yesterday; even at the start of qualifying, it seemed we could aim for a higher result, but we fell a bit short on the last lap.
Let's see if we can make up positions tomorrow, but if yesterday it seemed that Ferrari had some difficulties, today they noticeably improved, and that is impressive. They are usually fast in corners and less so on straights because their cars are set up for a higher level of downforce. In any case, tomorrow we are in for a tough race."
