Vowles explained why Albon's chassis was replaced.
Alex Albon, speaking with the press on Thursday, mentioned a certain issue related to the Williams chassis that emerged during the stage in Barcelona. Now this chassis remains at the team's base in Grove, where it is undergoing additional checks and bench tests. Williams team principal James Vowles explained what this is about.
James Vowles: "There are no problems with the chassis, but after Barcelona, we wanted to make sure of that, so we are conducting a series of tests at the team's base. In terms of operational procedures, the simplest way to do this is to replace the chassis, which has been done...
Alex is talking about this: this year we have seen several times that the balance is not quite what it should be, and the car behaves somewhat differently when going through left and right turns. This is the main point he is complaining about.
The difference is small, however, it manifests itself sufficiently when you are trying to achieve maximum efficiency from the tires on a track where the asphalt temperature has risen to 50 degrees. On some tracks, this is more pronounced, on others less so. And this is one of the reasons we decided to engage in bench testing at the base.
The good news is that they have had a positive effect, and we have made a number of small adjustments to the car setups already here in Austria. So I think the problem is behind us...
But we honestly say that our car is not yet at the engineering level we want to reach. And if we arrive at a track where the asphalt temperature is 50 degrees, with only a few turns, and the gaps can be minimal, and the difference in results does not exceed a few thousandths, then we will not be able to be in the front rows. But that does not mean we are not going to fight for points."
