Sainsa is concerned that the new products do not provide the expected effect.
Carlos Sainz is concerned that Williams' efforts to upgrade the FW48 car are not leading to any noticeable changes, contrary to expectations, although the chassis weight, which was clearly excessive at the beginning of the season, has already been reduced.
"The situation is alarming, what is happening is disappointing, as a bad trend this year is that we are not able to noticeably improve when we implement technical innovations," the Spanish driver for Williams told The Race. "After Silverstone, we need to analyze everything thoroughly, because although we have managed to significantly reduce the weight of the car, unfortunately, the gap to the leaders and the best teams in the midfield continues to increase."
The new front wing presented by the team at Silverstone was originally prepared for the race in Spa, but according to both Williams drivers, the problems are not only related to the excessive weight of the chassis but also to clear aerodynamic flaws, which result in the overall balance of the FW48 being quite poor.
"During the research in the wind tunnel and on the simulator, we definitely felt that this front wing should allow us to make a significant step forward," Sainz continued. "We definitely expected more, but unfortunately, we were not very competitive during the weekend in Silverstone.
I don't know what the issue is—whether it's that with this technical regulation we can't properly understand the airflow dynamics, or something else. But I have a feeling that in Suzuka, when we had a too heavy car, we were losing about 1.6-1.8 seconds per lap, and now, when it has become much lighter, we are losing two seconds.
This means that something is wrong with the car. We need to figure out the reasons for what is happening, and we must take this very seriously."
