"There will be no energy consumption whatsoever for an entire minute."

Fernando Alonso has cautioned that Formula 1’s debated 2026 regulations might create an embarrassing situation at Spa-Francorchamps this weekend. The two-time world champion, who has been one of the most vocal critics of the new rules, believes that energy management on the high-speed Belgian circuit will be particularly challenging.

"If you utilize energy at Spa from the first corner, La Source, to turn 5 at Les Combes to either attack or defend against an opponent, then it’s over for the rest of the lap," Alonso stated. "There would be no energy expenditure at all for a full minute in the second sector. And without any deployment, we must remember that this year we have considerably less power than last year and even less than F2."

In light of concerns regarding Formula 1’s current regulations, Ferrari is anticipated to unveil an updated ‘Macarena’ rear wing at Spa, which Italian reports suggest could enhance speed by as much as 11kph on the long straights of Belgium. The FIA is already reviewing the Macarena concept following Max Verstappen’s recent issues, with Laurent Mekies acknowledging that the team might need to abandon its own bold design.

Former Minardi team principal Giancarlo Minardi believes that Ferrari’s recent advancements have altered the dynamics of the championship race. "Silverstone once again demonstrated how closely contested this World Championship is," he remarked. "The finer details will determine the outcome from now until the season's end."

In contrast, Red Bull approaches Spa with cautious expectations. "We don’t anticipate winning any Grands Prix this season," Mekies conceded. "There’s no doubt that just the Austrian update will not suffice."

Ex-Formula 1 driver Ralf Schumacher posits that Ferrari’s edge in reliability may also be crucial, especially after Mercedes encountered another setback with championship leader Kimi Antonelli’s car at Silverstone. "Ferrari is currently the most dependable team regarding reliability," he noted.
