The specifications of the 2026 GMC Hummer EV are astonishing. It boasts high ground clearance, a steep approach angle, enormous power output, and tank-like wheel control, significantly advancing off-road capabilities with innovative technology. However, it is also as wide as a shipping container, presenting a new challenge for off-road driving in real-world conditions.
After spending a few days cruising around the Hudson Valley with the roof down, I brought the Hummer EV 3X Pickup Truck to Northeast Off-Road Adventures—a 75-acre off-road driver training center where I work as a trail guide. The facility features a vast network of trails ranging from easy to challenging, teaching everything from basic driving skills for Subaru Crosstrek owners to advanced recovery techniques for fully equipped overland vehicles.
Throughout my extensive experience in professional off-road driving, navigating a 9,600-pound electric Hummer through tight, tree-lined northeastern trails was not my most extreme “big fish in a small pond” scenario. That title still belongs to the time I spent navigating Australian jungles in an Isuzu NPR box truck, which was a mix of swearing, sweating, and shoveling rather than just driving. My vehicle handling skills have improved since then, and compared to that heavy vehicle, the ’26 Hummer feels like a space vehicle (even though the box truck was technically narrower according to specs).
Anyway, I’ve had enough real-world off-roading experience in the Hummer EV to offer a more balanced evaluation than simply saying it’s “big.” While I don’t expect many of these trucks to be used in extreme handling situations, it’s still important to determine if those multi-wheel-steering features are just gimmicks or genuinely effective.
Equipment
The model I tested was a three-motor 3X Pickup Truck with the optional 24-module battery pack and the Carbon Fiber Edition package, which allows for an impressive power output of “up to 1,160 horsepower and up to 13,000 lb-ft of torque.” This isn’t a mistake, but it does present a somewhat skewed specification—GMC cites wheel torque rather than motor torque to make the truck sound more impressive. The actual output is closer to 1,200 lb-ft, which is significant, even though the truck weighs nearly 10,000 pounds.
The tires are 35-inch (LT305/55R22) Goodyear Wrangler Territory all-terrain tires, which do not have particularly aggressive tread or significant sidewalls. They are mounted on 22-inch carbon fiber wheels (yes, they are real), part of a $13,700 Carbon Fiber Edition Package that features the material extensively on the vehicle’s exterior.
The carbon fiber addition looks fantastic, but I find it hard to imagine a clearer sign that this truck is not meant for off-road driving, especially to someone knowledgeable about vehicles. It’s daunting to think about how much it would cost to repair the aluminum body if it collided with a tree. What would you even do if you damaged a carbon wheel against a rock?
The test vehicle did not come with GMC’s Extreme Off-Road Package, which replaces the 22-inch wheels with 18-inch ones (providing more sidewall), adds locking differentials at both front and rear (which are different from those in a gas model), skid plates, underbody cameras, durable ball spline half shafts, and rocker protection. These features would have greatly assisted with traction and capability, but the package is an additional $10,000, which might deter some buyers.
The Hummer EV’s steering and its software system are significantly more intriguing than its accessories. The rear wheels can steer up to 10 degrees, utilizing this feature in two separate ways. Both “CrabWalk” and “King Crab” modes seem largely designed as bragging rights for owners, but without giving too much away regarding the next section of this review, I must admit they are effective when needed.
