      Both adjectives resonate because the Utopia Roadster is greater than the totality of its components, and everything else I drove before and after it will inevitably be compared to it. Not in an exact comparison but rather in the sense that, after over a decade in this field, it took a three-hour road test (and a seven-hour factory tour that included an amazing Italian lunch in the employee cafeteria) to reveal what is truly the pinnacle of independent, custom automotive craftsmanship. However, even this statement hardly captures the essence of Pagani.

      When experiencing most vehicles, you’re often just driving. Attending a car factory typically showcases a facility constructed by a large corporation to run a business. In contrast, the design and manufacturing environment that Horacio Pagani and his family and partners have established in San Cesario, near Modena, feels like the fulfillment of a lifelong dream. The cars produced there are dynamic treasures.

      The Details

      Beneath the Utopia Roadster lies a custom monocoque made of materials that sound extraterrestrial—Pagani Carbo-Titanium HP62 G2 and Carbo-Triax HP62—along with front and rear tubular subframes housed in a CrMo alloy steel chassis. This is a unique material combination that Pagani pioneered and patented through its design and engineering division, Modena Design. In-house artisans handle the entire process, from cutting the carbon fabric that eventually forms the tub and bodywork, to joining the chassis, drivetrain, and body after they have each completed their separate manufacturing stages.

      As has been the tradition since the company’s inception, the V12 engines in every vehicle are exclusively crafted for Pagani by Mercedes-AMG. Each engine is individually assembled by a single technician, and although constructed to Horacio’s precise specifications, some non-performance modifications are still made once the engines arrive in San Cesario. Several components are promptly swapped out with high-end aluminum parts meticulously machined by Pagani, regardless of whether the customer will see them. What truly matters is that every element of a Pagani reflects the company’s vision of performance and perfection.

      The 6.0-liter engine in the Utopia Roadster generates 864 horsepower and 811 lb-ft of torque, and in my test vehicle, it is matched with a lightweight, triple-clutch seven-speed manual transmission developed by the British company Xtrac. It’s a dog-leg manual, with first gear positioned all the way down and to the left, and second gear up and to the right. This aligns seventh gear where sixth gear would typically be in a standard manual. Additionally, there is no hybrid or electric component; as Horacio himself mentioned to me two years ago: “We have to create what the customer desires,” and “no one wants a hybrid.”

      Power is delivered to the rear wheels via Pirelli Cyber tires, which come with built-in sensors that communicate with the Utopia’s stability control systems, including ABS, ESP, and traction control, to ensure optimal performance and safety. In comparison to traditional sensors mounted inside the wheels or externally, these provide much more accurate data to the vehicle. Specifically, these are P Zero Corsa 265/35 R21s at the front and 325/30 R22s at the rear. Pagani also offers options for all-season and winter tires to cater to varying requirements.
