‘Strike It With A Hammer:’ Toyota’s Official Protocol for Diagnosing Recalled V6 Engines

What do you do when facing a malfunctioning part that won’t cooperate? If your answer is to “hit it with a hammer,” then you might just be suited for a role in Toyota’s warranty department. This is the innovative approach that the company's engineers have devised to test Toyota and Lexus trucks for a potentially serious engine defect that has led to a massive recall of over a quarter-million trucks and SUVs.
Yes, a hammer—in this instance, a small plastic hammer specifically designed to generate measurable vibrations in a controlled setting. Pickup Truck + SUV Talk provided a fairly thorough explanation of the process over the weekend. Essentially, by measuring the vibrations that flow through the engine when struck by this tool, Toyota can assess the condition of critical components without the need for an expensive and time-consuming physical examination of the engine.
“Essentially, this inspection utilizes the resonant frequency of the front of the crankshaft to evaluate the condition of the #1 main bearing,” a Toyota representative shared with The Drive via email. “Toyota’s development of this inspection involved testing numerous engines to distinguish the resonant frequency variations between a #1 main bearing that exhibits abnormal wear and one that does not.”
This concept is similar to how a tuning fork operates. High-quality tuning forks are crafted to precise specifications to ensure they resonate at the correct frequency—the note we perceive. While the sound of a small plastic hammer striking a metal crank pulley may not be particularly melodic, vibrations can be measured and yield predictable data. For enthusiasts, that's a valuable tool.
After replacing the engine fluids and checking for any other variables that could interfere, Toyota technicians attach a small accelerometer to the crank bolt and then hit the pulley with the hammer at the 3:00 position. The impact must fall within a certain threshold for the software to generate an accurate reading, and the hammer provides tactile feedback to the technician if their strike is too weak or too strong—similar to Mjolnir, one must prove their worth.
Every component is produced to identical specifications—same shape, same material makeup, same mass—which means they all vibrate at the same frequency. However, it’s not entirely that straightforward. The machinery used to manufacture these parts wears down over time, leading to looser tolerances, but manufacturers establish acceptable ranges, and standard quality control practices ensure that the products remain within the desired specifications. Nevertheless, errors can occur.
In this instance, Toyota asserts that debris left behind during production is damaging one of the main bearings (the components on which the crankshaft "floats" within the engine case), ultimately leading to engine failure. Toyota claims it has implemented measures to prevent debris from contaminating the crankcase in newer truck models, but in many cases, the damage has already occurred or is still in progress. This contributes to the fragmented nature of Toyota’s V6 recall campaign. To date, Toyota insists that not every truck equipped with the V35A engine necessarily requires a replacement engine.
Owners are understandably doubtful, but Toyota aims to provide reassurance that the process is not entirely arbitrary through this new procedure. By analyzing the frequencies transmitted throughout the engine, Toyota can assess the extent of degradation in the main bearing #1. When paired with software analysis of the truck’s service history, Toyota technicians can determine with reasonable—but not complete—certainty whether a particular engine is at risk of failure.
“Toyota developed this remedy to effectively identify whether the engine needs to be replaced in a covered vehicle,” stated Toyota’s representative. “Using inspection software, dealers will assess the #1 main bearing and gather available vehicle operational data to verify its condition. If the inspection software cannot confirm that the bearing is free from abnormal wear due to this issue, dealers will replace the engine.”
This solution is primarily intended to assist Toyota in identifying whether a given truck may encounter issues in the future; it is not designed for diagnosing trucks already exhibiting signs of engine trouble. In those cases, it is advisable not to delay:
“[O]wners experiencing any symptoms, such as engine knocking, rough operation, or a failure to start, should reach out to their Toyota or Lexus dealer,” the spokesperson advised.
