Stella: Lando was right in saying that the race wouldn't be easy.
After Lando Norris's second consecutive victory, McLaren team principal Andrea Stella has more reasons to promise fans that everything possible will be done to compete for the championship title.
Question: Lando achieved this victory partly thanks to the excellent work of the team and the right tactics – how do you assess today's success?
Andrea Stella: I think Lando was right when he said that the race promised not to be easy. In Hungary, our race pace was more convincing, but yesterday in the sprint, our car was not the fastest. In my opinion, the fastest car was Ferrari.
All teams are roughly equal in strength, and I genuinely believe that Formula 1 is in great shape right now. It's great that our car allows us to compete for wins. I would like to praise the whole team and both drivers, as we significantly adjusted the settings after the sprint. Additionally, the drivers were asked to change their driving style in a certain way to use the tire resources more effectively over the course of the Grand Prix.
I believe all these efforts paid off, and we deserved the victory in the sense that thanks to the work done after the sprint, we were able to significantly improve the situation.
Question: Towards the end of the race, Lando was on hard tires and showed incredible pace…
Andrea Stella: Agree, it was phenomenal! We know that when Lando is on tires that do not provide particularly effective grip, he fully demonstrates his talent compared to other drivers. Working with the tires today was not so easy!
From the example of Kimi Antonelli and Oscar Piastri in the second segment of the race, we saw that warming up the tires to the right temperature was quite difficult. But I think Lando feels at home when he has to drive on hard tires.
Question: Can we already say that you are aiming for the championship win? After all, Lando is now closer to Antonelli and is losing less to him than Max lost to Lando last year…
Andrea Stella: I don't even know how many points we are currently behind – 83? And before we can make up that deficit, we need to have many more weekends like this one. Right now, I prefer to focus on effective work at each stage of the season and upgrading the car.
If everything goes well, only then will we see what positions we occupy in the championship. But for now, Antonelli is far ahead, and quite deservedly so, while Mercedes rightfully leads in both championship standings. To give them a fight, we need to put in even more effort.
But just for the fans, I will say this: yes, we are going to fight for the title!
