ACI confirms that Imola is prepared for a potential emergency return to F1.
Formula 1 is developing contingency strategies not only for the conclusion of the 2026 season but possibly for the beginning of 2027 due to ongoing uncertainty in the Middle East. Qatar and Abu Dhabi are still set to host the season's finale, but reports from Italy suggest that Imola has emerged as the most likely European alternative if either event is disrupted.
Geronimo La Russa, president of the Automobile Club d’Italia, has acknowledged that preparations are in progress. "In light of the complex international circumstances in the Middle East, we are collaborating with governmental and sporting bodies to ensure our readiness to host a second Formula 1 Grand Prix in our country, potentially within a few months during the current championship." He described Imola as "the perfect solution."
La Gazzetta dello Sport notes that teams have started reserving accommodations near Imola for late November and early December, highlighting that the contingency plan is becoming increasingly tangible.
Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu expressed the desire for clarity soon. "Naturally, it would have been preferable to reach a decision sooner, but I understand the complexity involved," he stated. "The sooner a choice is made, the better."
Williams team principal James Vowles mentioned that an Imola finale would certainly be memorable. "If it ends up being Imola - and to be clear, that isn’t confirmed either way - the weather will definitely be intriguing and exciting. Nevertheless, it would be nice to return to a European race at the end."
This situation may also affect 2027. Both Autosprint and La Gazzetta report that F1's preferred plan is to kick off the season in Bahrain on March 14, followed by Saudi Arabia a week later, but an alternative schedule is already being formulated if the situation in the Gulf remains unfavorable.
In this scenario, China would lead off the season, followed by Japan and Australia, which cannot easily be rescheduled due to ongoing pitlane renovations at Albert Park. Bahrain and Saudi Arabia could then potentially be moved to later in the season, with Stefano Domenicali still aiming to preserve a 24-race championship in 2027.
