Pirelli: A one-stop strategy is also possible
The thermal degradation of the tires due to overheating was the main problem for the teams in Bahrain, but during the weekend the asphalt was covered with used rubber, the grip improved, and the qualifying results were solid again.
Mario Isola, Pirelli: "We saw a much more unpredictable and intense session than expected, but in terms of race strategy, the picture is more complicated than it might seem at first glance.
First of all, all three sets of tires can be used in the race. The one-stop strategy is clearly slower, and this option cannot be completely ruled out, especially since eight riders each have one new set of Hard and Medium. This group may consider starting on Medium and extending the first segment as much as possible, and then switching to Hard. If excessive degradation occurs in the final stages of the race, then switching to Soft, even to a new kit for those who did not participate in all qualifying sessions, may give an advantage.
As for the two pit stop strategy, the theoretically fastest option involves using two sets of Medium and one Hard, with a tire change between lap 14 and 20, and then between lap 34 and 40. Those who want to make the most of the best Soft tire grip at the start will have to pit earlier, between lap 10 and lap 16, to take advantage of the potential clipping, which is very effective on this track."
