Marko disappointed with Tsunoda during the Monaco GP.
"The updates were intended for both cars."
Dr. Helmut Marko is continuing to increase the pressure on Yuki Tsunoda. Following Red Bull's decision to replace Liam Lawson early in the season with the more experienced Tsunoda, Marko expressed that Tsunoda had rarely been so closely matched in pace with a teammate of Max Verstappen's caliber. However, the 82-year-old later pointed out that the Japanese driver has been struggling more as the pressures have intensified, which culminated in a dramatic rollover crash at Imola. Unfortunately for Tsunoda, 25, his car had only just been upgraded to match Verstappen's specifications—along with the completely new bodywork package that had significantly improved Verstappen's pace, leading him to pole position and victory at Imola. In Monaco, Tsunoda failed to reach the Q3 qualifying segment.
"It’s accurate to say that Yuki’s car does not match the specification of Max’s," Marko stated. "This is largely due to the serious accident he had in Imola. The updates were meant for both cars. His crash clearly caused significant damage to many new components,” the Austrian added. “We had to revert him back to the previous specification. Max is our priority, and in such a short timeframe, it’s not feasible to ramp up production enough to provide sufficient parts for both cars. Nonetheless, we still expected him to reach the third qualifying segment."
