Simple: I'm not an F1 history expert, but I have some connection to it.
Alain Prost is one of the frequent guests of the traditional Goodwood Festival of Speed, and of course, he couldn't miss the anniversary event dedicated to the 75th anniversary of Formula 1.
"I've already driven different McLaren cars," the legendary French driver said. "One was from 1985, which I also raced in the historic car race in France, and the other was from 1988. There aren't many opportunities to get behind the wheel of these cars, but it's great that they are here at Goodwood.
I'm also fortunate to meet many people here who worked with me in the 1980s, first at Renault and later at McLaren. Almost the entire McLaren team from that period is here, so it's not just about driving old cars, but also about reminiscing about the past.
Of course, you shouldn't go fast in them, especially since there’s no motivation for that, and generally, these machines should be treated with great respect and handled very carefully. Additionally, their current owners are here, and we shouldn't make them worried.
At Goodwood, we talk and share memories, and we have plenty to remember, since I won my first three titles with McLaren. Not in this specific car I’m driving now, but that’s not so important. There’s a lot of historic machinery here; after all, when I first started following Formula 1, Jackie Stewart was shining in Tyrrell, and even before that, he drove for Matra. Then Niki Lauda appeared — now it’s all part of our sport’s history.
You could say I am somewhat a traditionalist and remember all the heroes of the 70s, because I was a big fan of Jackie Stewart. Later, I had the chance to be Niki Lauda’s teammate at McLaren. I wouldn’t consider myself an expert on the history of Formula 1, but I also have a connection to it, and I’m incredibly happy to see how much fans love this festival.
Today, I’ve already signed a lot of photographs, and I’m sure I’ll be asked for more autographs. It was a pleasant surprise to see so many young guys and girls among the crowd. They came to Goodwood to see this marvelous machinery, and I really like it."
