George Russell participated in record-breaking races.
“There is a historic achievement! I’m proud to have taken part in a project during which we witnessed the Mercedes‑AMG GT XX concept car cover 40,000 km in less than 8 days! It’s like we circled the entire globe in that time,” such a message appeared today on George Russell’s social media pages.
To clarify, the Mercedes driver is talking about a record run in the newest electric car created by the Stuttgart concern, which made it possible to set more than two dozen world records, the main one being the record for distance in a day — 5,479 km in 24 hours.
“During my stint I was driving at 300 km/h, and the pit stops to recharge the battery lasted about a minute. Congratulations to the whole team on this impressive achievement!” added George.
The program, whose aim was to set a record, was planned for 8 days; the runs took place at the Nardò Ring test track in the province of Lecce in southeastern Italy. The lap there is 12.5 km, and to be precise, the team of 17 professional drivers covered 40,000 km in seven days, 13 hours, 24 minutes and 7.1 seconds.
It is hard not to recall Jules Verne’s famous novel “Around the World in 80 Days,” published in 1872.
The operation was organized in three shifts, with each 8‑hour shift’s workload shared among five drivers, and more than 100 specialists from various engineering disciplines were involved in the project, monitoring the runs both on the track and from Mercedes‑AMG’s headquarters in Affalterbach, Germany.
The powertrain of the record‑breaking electric car develops up to 1,341 hp, and the development of a special battery pack for it involved the engine‑building division of the Formula 1 team, which is based in Brixworth, UK.
“All these records were made possible by superb efficiency and an exceptionally fast battery recharge process. That means that everyone who becomes an owner of our electric cars in the future will have access to genuine AMG technology,” said Michael Schiebe, CEO of Mercedes‑AMG.
The GT XX concept car is not produced as a series model, but Stuttgart has promised to launch a four‑door Mercedes‑AMG GT coupe at the end of 2026 that will incorporate solutions successfully proven during these record runs.
