At the start of the session the drivers hurried to the track — the weather radar showed rain would begin in 14 minutes, but it started almost immediately and stopped just as quickly, without having time to wet the asphalt.
A few minutes later Lance Stroll locked up his front tyres before the cambered Turn 3, failed to turn and crashed into the barrier, wrecking the car. The session was stopped with red flags.
Lance confirmed he was okay, but the high G-force sensor triggered and he was sent to the medical centre for checks.
At the moment of the impact with the barrier Lance did not have time to take his hands off the wheel — a similar incident two years ago led to Daniel Ricciardo suffering a fracture and being replaced during the weekend, but this time he was unharmed. The car was recovered, it took time to clear oil and debris, then the drivers were able to go out again.
A couple of minutes later Isack Hadjar reported a loss of power in the power unit and stopped, having not completed a single flying lap. Hamilton spun on a fast lap with no damage to the car, but the set of tyres was ruined.
The red flags came out for a second time after Alex Albon ran off. The Williams driver locked up at Turn 1, went through the gravel run-off and hit the barrier. The car was recovered, Alex walked back to the pits and his session was over.
Returning to the pits under red flags on the pit lane, Russell slightly clipped Piastri’s car — Oscar was manoeuvring to turn into the pits and ended up in the path of the Mercedes driver.
The weather improved, and for the final fifteen minutes the drivers ran without problems. The best time was again set by Lando Norris, who lapped in 1:09.890.

The stands in Zandvoort were already full on Friday morning. Max Verstappen’s “Orange Army” was not as numerous as in previous years, but it was supplemented by McLaren fans in “papaya colours,” so overall the atmosphere was unchanged. Gusty wind spoiled things a little, but there was no rain.
At the start of the session the race control activated the virtual safety car mode, but only to test the equipment. A couple of minutes later the mode was lifted and the drivers hurried onto the track, starting the day with a short run on Medium tyres.
Hamilton spun, Tsunoda went off at Turn 12, and on the 11th minute the session was stopped with red flags — Kimi Antonelli suffered a mechanical failure and stopped the car in the gravel trap — ending the session early. The car was recovered, and a few minutes later the drivers went back out.
Seeing his teammate’s car, Gasly slowed on the racing line and impeded Hamilton — Lewis was closing fast from behind but managed to avoid contact.
In the second half of the session clouds rolled in from the sea, but the track remained dry, no further incidents occurred, and the drivers completed the traditional long run on Medium tyres without problems.
Lando Norris topped the timesheets, lapping in 1:10.278, three tenths faster than his teammate. The others were half a second or more behind.
While practising the standing start procedure after the session ended, Max Verstappen ran off at Turn 1 and stopped in front of the barrier. He couldn’t get out of the gravel, and the car had to be recovered.
