The latest updates and reviews in the automotive world, without any nonsense.
Mercedes-Benz's flagship electric vehicle has faced some challenges. Dealers have remarked that the EQS isn't “aspirational” enough, leading to substantial discounts due to low sales of the large liftback sedan. At one point, there were rumors that it would be replaced by an electric S-Class, and production for the U.S. market was temporarily halted. However, manufacturing has resumed, and the vehicle is set to receive a midcycle refresh.
On Monday, the 2027 Mercedes-Benz EQS was unveiled with a revised design, increased range, additional gears, faster charging, and an enhanced interior, all aimed at boosting sales. Additionally, it introduces Mercedes’ new steer-by-wire system featuring a yoke.
When the 2027 EQS arrives in the U.S. later this year, its battery capacity will increase from the current 118 kWh to 122 kWh. However, the battery itself isn’t physically larger; it simply has a higher energy density. This increase in capacity is expected to elevate the current EPA-estimated range from 385 miles to approximately 420 miles on a full charge. The new two-speed transmission, first introduced in the electric CLA and more recently in the electric GLC-Class, will assist the EQS in achieving greater distance and efficiency through varying gear ratios for different speeds.
The transmission is paired with new electric motors, which are anticipated to be more efficient, generating 544 and 585 horsepower, depending on the configuration.
The vehicle operates on a new 800-volt electrical system that allows for charging rates of up to 350 kW. This means the EQS can potentially add up to 175 miles of range in just 10 minutes under optimal conditions. When charging at a 400-volt fast-charging station, the EQS will effectively split its battery pack, reaching a peak charge rate of 175 kW.
While numerous changes have occurred beneath the exterior, the EQS's overall stance and design remain consistent. The plastic grille, which received the style of the S-Class, continues to feature backlit stars embedded within it. The hood ornament can also be illuminated to announce your arrival.
Inside, optional front-door panels have stitched laurels reminiscent of the Mercedes logo. The cupholders, redesigned following customer feedback about the previous design, now include new silver trim. Additionally, buyers will enjoy heated front seatbelts, similar to those found in the updated S-Class.
However, it’s the steering yoke that truly stands out. Its design is more aligned with a starship than a Tesla, featuring closed loops at both ends to encourage—or at least suggest—a proper nine-and-three hand position. The yoke, along with the steer-by-wire system, will be available as an option in the U.S. at an yet-to-be-determined price.
Mercedes-Benz has not yet disclosed the pricing for the refreshed EQS when it hits showrooms later this year.
